2 OAK Quadrant's needed for Kithen

Why not simply get 4 pieces of wood just over the size of the quadrant and do a paper glue up. Use cheap wood for two of these and place them diagonally opposed to each other that way no imbalance. Turn to the quadrant diameter then split. The only thing is to make sure that whatever centre you...

    Watch the birdy

No problem Chas. I agree I have had people ask about making a second of something but many things I make are one-offs. There are one or two things that I will make more than one and that is the little birdhouses as these make use of the little pieces of wood that would otherwise be binned...

    Watch the birdy

Not all turning is arty or serious woodturning sometimes it is making something just for the fun of it. This bird cocktail stick holder is made from Ash ad American Black Walnut. Finished with cellulose sander sealer and Melamine lacquer, it stands 4 1/2" tall

    Chestnut Burr

Thank you, Stewart. I think a simple shape is better for wood like this.

Is there anything special about a woodturning spindle blank?

There is nothing wrong with buying a long length from a merchant in the correct thickness for your needs. Just cut to length for the piece you are turning. The spindle blanks you buy from a woodturning supplier start out that way and you pay more as they have had to cut to length and seal the...

    Hardening soft wood?

As Chas pointed out CA or thinned sealer. For wood like this, I do tend to use a 50/50 mix of sealer to thinners. Turn near to size then coat with either method let it dry naturally as trying to use an accelerator with CA can in some cases turn it white. Take fine cuts until you have a clean...

    Round marble tile

Not bad prices a 3ft one for £2.79 and I would not want to find a blank for their 12ft one either    I think they got the symbols mixed up

The locking device is normally a grub screw fitted on a collar which is part of the chuck. this may mean buying a new chuck with this facility on it.

    Alternative jaws

One thing I have done is degrease the outside and give it a coat of wax for added protection

    Cutting on the back side.

I make boxes and hollow forms most of which I can't see down into the piece especially when working through a 3/4" hole so everything I do is by feel and stopping to clear out the piece and then checking the thickness inside. Even with boxes I stop regular and check the walls and bottom mostly...

    Avoiding glue ridges.

One important thing is that all woods are dry, also some woods move more than others and as CHJ stated Pva can creep as well.

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

Re-mounting work can be quite satisfying when you get it right as you have achieved something that may seem impossible sometimes.
