What to do with this burl ?

I have been called many things but never been told I am posh as I refer to mine as a workshop, I suppose that the next step will be to add an extension and call that a gallery

What to do with this burl ?

Leave it as is for the time being. Not sure how experienced you are if a novice then wait until you have a little more experience and then look at it with fresh eyes. I have burrs and other interesting pieces that are in my wood store just waiting for that inspiration before either cutting into...

    Workshop time

Progress on the hollow form. This afternoon hollowing completed but still needs sanding under the rim but the homemade sanding tool needs modifying to fit in the opening. Not sure if to put a small lid with a twisted final on it. May just make one and see what it looks like. Certainly not...

    Workshop time

Thank you both. Yes, the second one I am working on is a little punky so sharp tools are a must as well as stabilising. I was getting the first hollow form to a nice consistent thickness with plenty of stops and measuring just annoyed with myself for allowing to be distracted for a split...

    Workshop time

Well have managed some workshop time at last finished putting a background colour on a hollow form that went bang. This is the one that went bang and what shape it is now. And no I did not go through the side a second of loss of attention and I caught the rim. And while that is drying...

    Scroll Chuck advice needed

I have the versa chuck from toolpost and the great thing is that I can buy carriers for many different manufacturers jaws so does not limit me to just one make so where one may make a certain jaw set I do not need to buy another chuck to use them( mind you having 4 chucks at the moment I don't...

    Yorkshire grit?

Remember that it is wax-based so no good if you want to apply different finishes on top. Great if you intend to use another wax product

    Texturing tools

Also have a look at THIS I have one and use it on spindle work as well as bowls. A couple of my examples one spindle using the spiralling part and one face work using the texturing. It does take a bit of practice so stick with it and you will get there

    Rookie first lathe

Now that you are about venture into this great hobby think about joining a club you may get the opportunity to try different lathes. Try to look for a lathe that has a easy to buy accessories for like a common thread size or a common MT in head and tailstock. Variable speed is a bonus with any...

    Spindle gouge scooping

I have blanks like that and just keep them in the wood store until I find an ideal project. Small bowl are good, remember that once you put a chucking point on them you will lose some of the depth anyway As for tear out sharp tools which I am sure you have read many times is a must as well as...

    Spindle gouge scooping

You should be able to but ideally from the outside inwards the same as turning the inside of a bowl. Side grain boxes are not really the best as you will get much more movement

I am looking at getting THIS is it worth it and has anyone got one and your thoughts I know it has a limited capacity but for what I want it for it should be ideal. Anything thicker which will be a rare occurrence I would have to think about how to deal with it another way

Problem with Axminster Wood Turning Lathe

I will duplicate my answer from elsewhere so that others know what I ststed before to you. Unplug and then have a look in the switch box and see if there is a build-up of dust in there, even though it may seem sealed worth doing and cleaning out use a vac if you can. Check any wiring for...

    question about drilling

If you make the bottom of the tenon too deep it may bottom out in the chuck it needs to be a fraction shorter as well as that a small flat next to the tenon for the jaw faces to push against may help. Hope this LINK works but some very useful information.

    question about drilling

Other than the alignment issue already mentioned is to try and make a centre hole using a small stub drill bit so the centre of the Forstner bit enters that keeping everything in line, or use a skew chisel just to make a small divet for it to start. Drill bits if over long may try to move...

    At last

Since making the Angels and Minors I have not done anything in the workshop due to having the flu, the good news is that I managed to get out there today and tidy up and prepare a piece and get it roughed out now there are shavings all over the floor. Don't you just hate it when you feel...
