    Kity K5 combi machine

Hi, I have a Woodman K5, would it be the forerunner of the Kity K5 or was it a clone? Sadly my machine is now in poor, but restorable condition, are they worth the effort? Also are the flat belts still available, as even my 'new' ones seem to have perished. I would like to to get the thing...

    Old Tool Renovation WIP

I've got one of those little JCB bandsaws, bought about 30 years ago and it was thought ancient then, which is why I got it very cheap. Its had to live slightly outside in a temporary lean-to because the winter collapsed the shed it was living in, but a new workshop is underway, and it will be...

    Tools by Rawlplug ?

I think they are for cutting the old furry fibre rawlplugs, that went with the chisel type drills or even the funny hand drills, which I occasionally still use. G.

    PC again!

It's a shame Mel Gibson isn't making it, then we could have had the Americans bombing British dams using their specially modified B17's, to prevent us plotting with Hitler to recapture our lost Colonies. G

Poor cancer detection in the UK

When I was a nurse twenty years ago, we had a ward under two consultants, on one side of the ward under Mr A you were not for re-sus if you were over 75, on the other side under Mr B it was 65, natuarlly we ignored Mr B. The other problem is that doctors are inundated by the worried well who...

    Record G clamps - unpainted?

Did my usual trip to the Sammy Miller auto jumble, and picked up 3 Record 8" clamps, (the old style with the large butterfly to turn with) for £12. Cleaning off the workshop muck I found one still had its Record transfer on, but it is quite clearly plain, no paint, so would these be war time...

    Sorby 'progressive' tooth saw

Hi all I rediscovered an old saw I bought years ago and I am not sure what its proper description would be. It is a 26" Sorby kangaroo brand, but the interesting thing is it is 5 1/2 tpi at the front, running to a 4tpi at the handle. Did this progressive chage in tpi have a particular...

    Workshop accident...

I had this done one lovely afternoon @ A&E, however they didn't stop drilling when the blood started seeping out, oh no. They carried on further until they hit the flesh underneath the nail. If my face didn't tell them to stop, my colourful language definitely did! Now that hurt like...

    poor quality products

Years ago I bought four pairs of pliers made in and marked USSR, at 50p each I was not expecting much, as standard pliers were about £3. I think they were made from the last of the German Panzer's, their as hard as hell, never notched, still parallel, and will see me out, they laugh at...

    poor quality products

As has been said it is not a modern phenomenon, if you look at the piles of ancient junk at boot fairs you soon realise that for every quality tool sold there were 200 useless versions. Woolworth's would sell a 'real' wood plane for 6d, whilst a tool shop would stock one at 19/6d, which do you...

    Neighbours from hell

Seem to remember this from somewhere (no liability excepted) :) Write to them stating you will have the branches removed professionally at their expense in 28 days. If they do not agree to the terms of the contract they must contact you in writing within 7 days to say so, and arrange to have...

    Bolt thread what nut?

5/16x18 is the thread pitch of both BSW and UNC. If the bolt head is plain or only has the makers initials marked it is probably BSW. if it has either a circular recess or three lines at 120 degrees around the top it should be unc. Don't be tempted to wind the wrong one on, its bad practice. G

    Russian No 43

I bought some cheap USSR pliers years ago, at 50p each I thought I'd by four and throw them away as they wore out. That didn't work, they have never worn out despite years of abuse cutting stainless wire. They must have been made out of recycled panzer tanks, roughish but indestructible...

    Welding Masks

Hi Hitch Seeing your strap line, I thought you might like the this little ditty we sing to the nippers when they get a flash. "Arc eye burning like fire. arc eye, when I blink there's pain. Oh will my eyes that hurt so badly, ever see again? arc eye! G

    Welding Masks

I'm a fabricator by trade and I use a cheap one, every day, and all day. I have never noticed a quantifiable difference between the £35 helmet and the £120 in use, and they are just as easy to damage by accident. Where you do have to take care is in replacement glass, make sure the...

    Casting the detective

Detective novels and TV has never been my thing, but I drifted into Wallander via the KB version (when will he learn to stop acting). Now I find that I am quite disappointed there will be no more Wallanders, as Krister Henriksson has decided he doesn't want to carry on with the character.

Folding Bed Design ( HELP needed )

The bed in my caravan is like a tambour, slats fixed to two straps, you pull it out of its box along two runners, but it stows away brilliantly. Probably no help, but I like it. G

    I don't think I got over excited

I think I have slipped over the slope of no return, when I looked up my No 3's for dating purposes I discovered there's a No 2 smoothing plane, a rare beast it would seem, again I have never seen one so the hunt is on. I did walk away from a Stanley rabbet & fillister plane on the same stall...
