Best finish for exposed pine floorboards?

I can confirm the water based dyes and varnishes are useless, I put new boards down with three coats of stain, and five of varnish, and it wore off in heavy use areas in 18 months. I do hope the shellac suggestion works to fill in the patches as the thought of sanding the whole floor and...

    Rip off Ford!

Thank goodness I run a Morris Minor Van, it will still be going when all these electronics/plastic packed cars are junk, if they aren't already. Gareth

    Wind turbine stupidity!

If you want to get a bad idea adopted sell it to the Greens, they haven't had a good one yet unleaded fuel - highly toxic Low energy bulbs - highly toxic wind farms - grossly inefficient Bio fuel - respocible for rain forest clearances, reduced food production, and massive damage to older...

help with jet bench drill please

Your test is a false one because the edge of your piece of ply, is in fact like a piece of corrigated iron in magnification, and it cannot possibly stay in one place. As has been suggested use a piece of bar that has been percission ground round, ordinary black will not run true either. From...

Has Range Rover lost the plot ?

Four wheel drives should have canvas tops, leaking or canvas doors, squab cushions, and under emergancy conditions be used for ploughing. Anything else is just a car! Gareth

    Motor bike, again.

There is a similar part on the carb' of a Honda CB 250 RS. I don't know if it the correct size without taking mine to bits, which I have just finished rebuilding. Try looking at the parts diagramme on this site and see if looks usable...

    Bootfair today...update Sunday...

Now you know exactly what these are don't you? If you do...can you tell me please! The cream colour, seems to remind me of the fittings used on the last of the table mounted mangles, but I'm probably wrong. Gareth

    Hand Operated Pillar Drills

Most of those things were designed to be used with flat-drills rather than the more modern twist-drill. An awful lot have had the feed ratchet removed, and that I think is why so many are worn, as they have been pushed through the work too fast, or the reverse they were overloaded by the...

Arc welding 3mm mild steel ?

Not that I would want to discourage anybody from learning to weld as I am a fabricator by trade, but if it is an important project why not get a professional to do it for you, and you can learn on something that is possibly slightly less critical. You can buy a lot of proffesional weld time...

    Devil gate drive!

A very nice gate, I get to make lots in metal, one day I might get to make a wooden one, but that will be for me. In my Bosses code that looks like a RHHOI (Right Hand Hinge Opening In) as viewed from the front. Gareth

    Free downloadable woodwork books

I have just downloaded the book Elementary Woodworking Projects, by Harold R. Wise, http://www.archive.org/details/elementarywoodwo00wise I hope I have put up the link. For no particular reason other than it appeared in a search. A quick search in the catalogue shows there may be dozens of...

    Boot sale saw set

Oh Good, if everybody is moving on to saw sets that means the price of planes will go down and there will be less competition in the field, so I might have more success at the totally unrealistic price I want to pay for them. Gareth

what preservative, on a hidden shed side?

Hi all I am beginning to construct my replacement workshop part of which will be a sheet and stud side wall, that will have to run only a few inches from a neighbours concreat block wall, which apart from a few inches at the top hides my wall completely. Because of this whatever I use will...

    Kity K5 combi machine

Hi Bob A copy of the later manual would be very useful, as the early one is very basic, thank you for the offer. The spindle is the 20mm diameter veriety, if I can get it all up and running again I think I might try and converrt the spindle block to a more modern size. Gareth

    Kity K5 combi machine

Hi Bob My machine is the splayed leg type, in the cream colour. I am lucky in that I have eight double sided A4 sheets that appear to be instructions, but it starts with the tenoning device and ends with the grinding attachment. Gareth
