    Box Sash Windows

Jfc is right about wedging the tenons but the correct joint for the meeting rails when there is no joggle horn is as shown here: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Nx2R ... &ct=result (needs modifying slightly for large double-glazing rebate) Cheers Malcolm

    Prototype Writing Box

I like it Ed, the bulbous front and the recessed top. My only minor criticism would be that the top might be a dust trap. Cheers Malcolm

    Advice on Sash window tooling

Hi Phil All the standard cutters for sale seem too chunky for traditional sashes. I have a number that were ground specially for the old-style Whitehill blocks as and when I needed them. I usually scribe by hand with gouge and coping sash unless there is a vast amount to do. If you want to...

    smoke etc when mortising idigbo

In case anyone is interested I decided to take the plunge and I bought a Fox morticer with 1400rpm motor for £360 inc del. I've only done a 10 minute test so far but there seems to be no burning at this speed and hopefully I've cracked the problem. Cheers Malcolm

    smoke etc when mortising idigbo

Thanks for all the replies. I'm pretty sure I have the bit set far enough below the chisel but I will check again for sure tomorrow. I've just done a search for the previous thread on this sort of problem and taken in all the suggestions which I will also check out tomorrow but I think this...

    smoke etc when mortising idigbo

Hi All I use quite a lot of idigbo but when morticing I get a lot of smoke from the drill bit which also leads to the creation of a lot of gunge deposited on the bit and chisel and occasionally black liquid dripping onto the wood. In some wood directory it said this was due to too high a speed...

    Poetry

We were made to learn this at school 40yrs ago and although I don't have much interest in poetry I can still remember the first verse and find the whole thing very evocative of the English countryside and trains. Adlestrop by Edward Thomas Yes. I remember Adlestrop— The name, because one...

digital camera flash working only now and again

Thanks very much for the reply Chris. I've just been playing around with camera. I've got two sets of batteries - one nearly ready for recharging and one almost fully charged and I now can't get the flash to NOT work. It must be the law of sod. I think there is merit in your idea though and I'll...

digital camera flash working only now and again

Can someone in the know help me please. I took my Fuji Finepix 4700 with me to view a job this morning and I needed to take a number of photos indoors. The flash worked for the first three and then refused to work again. I tried turning off and on, closing the flash and opening again, etc -...

    Restoration of old Stair Spindles

I'm a joiner not a turner so your experience will be better than mine, but as a tradesman I would suggest offering the customer the option of paying for either several hours improving the antique spindles or (probably cheaper) making all new ones. He can then decide how badly he wants to keep...

    Elm Table

It's the same situation in the UK. Most of our elms have gone though there are still a few places where they still grow. Sussex County Council had a policy of felling diseased elms as soon as they showed signs of dutch elm disease and burning all the debris, and it worked well in protecting the...

    Elm Table

A few years ago I was sub-contracted a job to make a table and bench seat in 3" teak to the same design as yours. I spent ages pondering how I was going to cut the dovetails efficiently but the job never happened as the end customer never came up with the deposit. So I will never know how I...

    What hard/soft woods available?

I use a lot of Idigbo for doors and windows (and gates). I agree that it is sometimes soft and wooly but only a very small proportion are like that. It is mostly a fairly stable, light-medium weight durable hardwood. You do need sharp chisels as it is rather soft and when morticing it tends to...

Hi Mike Why not try your local joinery shop or furniture maker and ask if they have any offcuts you could buy. Cheers Malcolm

    wood movement

Hi Tim You don't say whether you have any 1" oak. The 3" will be fine for the legs and arms but I wouldn't cut it down to 1" for the slats etc. Even after 3 years there will be a lot of moisture inside the 3" boards causing probable distortion after cutting to thin pieces. Also 1" boards are...

    Site and Workshop Joinery Magazine

If you decide on the internet route I wouldn't charge for it as that would put a number of people off. It seems to me that the way to make a web site pay is to get lots of traffic and use google ads and other advertising. I think an online mag for joiners would be a great idea, I'd be a regular...
