    Dangers of Wire wool

A reasonable comment on the High kW transmission....the current 'flowing about' in some places can be quite high and cause...at least theoretically...current flow in the loose steel wool , thus heating. It''s possible to be electro-luxed through 'experiencing' antenna current. If as some one...

    Staircase spindle movement

RJ, The general consensus is make an effort to resolve the matter even if it 'costs'. You wrote " When I installed the spindles I glued in a 12 mm dowel using pu glue and also pinned at an angle. This has always worked and I have done quite a few of these jobs without problem". It's peculiar...

    Staircase spindle movement

There may be a warranty period by law...check that. That aside is it an OHS matter in which you could find yourself in expensive proceedings? if a person is injured or some kid crals through dislodging the spindles and then falls ..If not covered by warranty , claim or law then it's the...

    Vice recommendations

I notice that the correct spelling 'vyce' brings up a range of DVD's which should be under 'vice' ...like 'program' and 'net' in lieu of 'programme' and 'nett'...and 'thru' in lieu of 'through' and...etc...

Cutting a groove in brass rod?

yes...actually setting it inside a collet might be easiest to hold it steady (?)

Cutting a groove in brass rod?

I thought the same and thought it an easy fix...Apparently I was also 'wrong'. The answer here is great patience and sensitivity...'gently gently' and perhaps 'a little at a time' with a live centre tip tucked just inside a tiny counter-sink ...just enough to maintain the horizontal. The option...

Cutting a groove in brass rod?

Hi..the centre if just inside a countersunk ' other end ', that is just in contact should not bow the thin rod...would you agree novo?

    Another re-handled saw.

Was that actually adding thread to the skein?....Uh oh!!...of course.not, what a preposterous thought! however with a little more empathy she could have let you go, knitting scarves for left handed people.

    Another re-handled saw.

Interesting ...different perceptions, with the way Nigel has done it!...I ...if asked...would have though and said 'right handed' not 'cacky-handed'...why? because the most visible part of the handle when right handed sawing is the right hand side...which on Nigel's handle parades the...

Although used for it vyces are not made to be bashed and belted and of coulse that includes the items held . If you have that in mind a steel vyce will be a better choice than cast. They are readily available as far as I know. With steel you have a better option than cast both in less invasion...

    Thats not a knife.

I think a similar situation arose in the early Monty Python where they were being taught to defend off an attack with a banana or some such....fresh fruit....a pointed stick. As your once-were-allies across the channel might say "c'est tellement stupide...si pas bizarre"

    Thats not a knife.

Of course the wooden katana (or much more rarely wakazashi or tanto)is for practice ...similarly as in Kendo which I 'played' .We don't need our mates lopped up. It has some weight and assists in perfecting strokes. Musashi's first killing was, if I recall, using a bokken...they can split a...

    Thats not a knife.

It's not news that not all knives are for fighting as in 'dagger' some are for wielding downwards with weight driving the edge . I know Mr Temple gave some good advice, I want to suggest an alternative...leave it as it is but change or extend the guard to a hoop...even to something similar to...

To restore or not restore...that is the question

Definitely restore it but keep patina...get rid of those bodgie hinges and find some'used' of the era. You have good handles there too....The thing also is that to buy something similar could cost a motza...I don't know about UK but in Horstroylya it would bring over $100 as it is and I wouldn't...

Tap & Die Set Recommendation Needed

I think that's all good advice, Music Man' with a couple of comments from my thinking ...I don't use spray as in my view it is inadequate in maintaining good/best lubrication and dissipating the 'hot spots' when cutting. Trefolux 'hangs around' though melting and has some mystery bits in its...

Tap & Die Set Recommendation Needed

Hi...ok advice, but don't dip taps into the lubricant....and that includes Trefolex...use a spatula to apply the lubricant to the tap and don't be backwards in sometimes cleaning the tap free of lube and swarf with a lint free cloth...and the spatula. It's surgical skills in engineering...not a...

Tap & Die Set Recommendation Needed

Hi thanks for the heads-up ...I sort of know its 'around' but 'real' hardware stores carrying an array of the things one does need are few and far between now 'Bunnings' has taken over as China-only...although occasionally one finds something actually made in better areas. I'd feel a bit...

    Long drill or extension needed

On a combination circular saw, planer, spindle borer the last is commonly used for dowling. The borer is checked to the planer drum. There is an adjustable supporting plate below the borer and one can slide the timber to be drilled firmly onto the (horizontal) drill. Setting aside the making...
