Can anyone help with this finish

Have copied image to my daughter, who makes jewellry with a similar finish but is also a Chartered Materials Scientist, to see if she knows anything about it. Will report if she does.

    Sink tops

Just about to do some upgrading in our kitchen, including new sink to replace a tired Astracast stainless steel one. We want to keep with steel, and there seems to be a huge range of different prices. Is there any measureable difference in quality between different makes? Our plumber...

Looking to buy a Metal Lathe

.......which shouldn't be a problem if the OP has not used another lathe! Until he tries to do this and finds he's hardwired the wrong direction of rotation into his muscles. Used to be fun when we had two Volvo 120s; SWMBO's was automatic, with the indicator switch on the right of the steering...

    OH!! OARS AN ROLLOCKS

Don't be too hasty chucking it. EVen if it needs a rewind, IMHO, the motor you would have after the rewind would still represent better value than the same spent on a new one. And even if you don't need the (OK slightly quirky) attachments, the next owner might. (Have no illusions - those...

    OH!! OARS AN ROLLOCKS

If you don't want to use the accessories (you don't know what you're missing :? ) then any standard foot mount motor of a size and power that will go in the space should be fine. Only problem might be shaft diameter, as the original is probably imperial size. (Of course once we've been fully...

    Wood Milne Design

Not had a chance to get near it with camera, nor likely for a few days. Any particular points that deserve images?

    Wood Milne Design

Apart from the pressure gauge, that is the pump that sits under the rear deck of my Golf! Inherited from my late Father, so must date back at least to the 1940s. As you say, beautifully made, works like a dream and has got me out of awkward situations several times in the last 35 years.

    OH!! OARS AN ROLLOCKS

If it doesn't need the double ended motor, you shouldn' t have too much problem getting a replacement as it's just a standard foot mounted job. But if it's the double ender, you may be looking at rewinding?

    My worst accident so far

It sure would not have been. I cut the tendon in base of thumb being silly pruning an apple tree 40-odd years ago, and was in for three days if memory serves me right. But was lucky in that discovered after the event that the "local" hand surgeon was regarded as possibly the best in the UK...

Why is it I never have the right drill bit?

Made one of those a good many years ago, but vertical, with the dowels sloping up at 45 degrees. Botanical friend looked at it and said "ah, a wellingtonia"

    More about laburnum

I'm a great fan of laburnum, but still no convinced aþout anyone planting it on that particular site for timber. Though the link to Arts and Crafts might be the right timing. Must see if there's any more local history information.

    More about laburnum

Not really woodWORKING as such, but wondered if anyone on here had ideas to explain a rather strange site (deliberate spelling!). On the open hill up above Stonehaven, altitude about 200m, there are two stonewalled enclosures each about 20m square. Inside the enclosures are some 8 to a dozen...

    Brodie's Scottish woodwork show

Congratulations! But "less than optimal" must be the understatement of the year............

    Brodie's Scottish woodwork show

Did anyone get to this? I set off down from Aberdeen this morning, but the rain and wind on the A90 made driving a nightmare, so chickened out with a coffee at Castleton and return home. What did I miss?

    Glass query

toughened would be better than nothing, but remember that it only takes a tiny press with a sharp point into toughened glass for it to shatter, albeit into non-dangerous small pieces (my daughter's favourite way of teaching her students about the dangers). Laminated would be much better if you...

    Heating the workshop

Surprised noone has mentioned the old-fashioned storage heaters. If you have a night tariff, they are not too expensive to run and quite effective if your shop is well insulated and has some thermal mass (e.g. concrete floor with insulation below it). Not good if your main work time is...

    Aldi grinders

Aldi have both wet-and-dry and grinder-belt sanders on special offer this week. No idea on quality, but could the belt sander be bodged into a cheapskate Pro-Edge if (like me) you happen to have the relevant Sorby jigs?

    Powering a "new" tormek

Did exactly that with exactly the same machine! One of our neighbours was throwing out an old boiler and it had a 1/8th HP fan motor of about the right size and a 1/4" shaft, about the same as the original that fitted in the drill. Bodged up a mounting for it but the weight of the motor was...

    Old Motise Machine

Yes, that's probably it. One of my family worked there 40 odd years ago, but he died this year, so a bit difficult to check :(

    Old Motise Machine

Don't know if they would be interested, but isn't there a museum village somewhere in Warks that has reconstructed buildings saved from around the county? Avon Dassett? Could be worth a try.
