Horology: Silver brazing tiny part, old mild steel

Just one comment- the hearth needs to keep the heat in as much as possible. It's an important part of the brazing process, not just something to rest the object on!

    Have I seen the future???

Actually went to a talk about these things a couple of months ago. According to that, Rolls-Royce use 3D metal printing to create honeycomb cowlings for current jet engines. Saves 30% on weight. There's also a place called ?make? in Aberdeen that provides access to quite advanced printers, among...

    Have I seen the future???

Picked up the current Aldi catalogue yesterday; their "online offers" include a 3d printer for under £300, supposedly capable of producing work up to 150mm cube. Will anyone want to work wood in 5 years time?

    Need adaptor making

Gonna be an awful lot of overhang and possibilities for non-concentricity with that design. Completely off-the-wall suggestion:- the two threads are not THAT different. If the register faces of the chuck will allow it, get someone to recut those to match the register on the lathe nose. Then...

Looking for some info: Startrite saw

Spot on with the Inca connection. Inca did a system back in the 70s(?) rather like tke Kity ones, with saw and planer on one bench, with a single motor that could be slid along a mounting bar to power one or the other. For a brief period, Startrite sold them, badged as Startrite-Inca. Don't...

    Ply cupboard making tools question

Son-in-law has now fitted out two VW campers with me as assistant, so we have a bit of experience. Key things are probably weight and precision in measuring, as the interior of yr average van isn't blessed with many straight lines. Between us, we are pretty fully kitted out with wood and metal...

    Stanley No 50

Well......... best guess (tricky even under microscope) is 0.16" diameter by 36t.p.i. So possibly 1/8" by 36? Trouble is, there are only 2 or 3 threads visible, so difficult to be 100% sure. Checked with the tables, and none of the standards (Whit., UNC/F or BA) corresponds, as 1/8" is 40 tpi...

    Stanley No 50

If noone else replies, will have a check with thread gauge tomorrow. But there are only two or three threads on them, so there may be some ambiguity.

    Brad point drill bits

Related question; I have one of the excellent Axy sets of lip and spur bits that they sold a couple of years ago. Somewhere, I've lost the 5mm one and can't find a sensible replacement - seem either to be stupidly expensive or cheap and nasty. Any suggestions?

What do I need for welding other than the welder

Would have expected wool to be OK, although haven't ever seen woolen overalls. Do have an aertex fleece, though!

    harrogate show

True, but at least there are events like Yandles nearer to you. There's effectively nothing north of the Border now. OK, I know, our fault for not enough of us patronising the old Ingliston show. Ho hum.

    Pine panels near Edinburgh

Rembrand, who are in Inverurie and Dundee are very helpful and carry fairly reasonable stock, but are probably too far for you.

    harrogate show

Was wondering about going, but after a nightmare drive down to Edinburgh and back yesterday, the thought of the extra 200 miles to Harrogate is too off-putting. Maybe next year.............! Incidentally, I see Brodies show was listed for earlier in the year, but missed it. Did anyone get...

    Hinged Stair Project

Not quite as heavy, but do remember foldaway bed in a holiday flat in Black forest. Might be worth a look for ideas or even a ready-made solution?

Got several boxes of brushes from a job lot. Mostly "domestic appliance" ones, but quite a range of sizes. If you have dimensions PM me and you might be lucky. Cost of postage only!

    Books....proof positive of dumbing down!

Paul Temple? That's positively modern. By the time that came on the wireless, the transistor had arrived, so we didn't have the problem of the accumulator running out before the next episode of **** Barton!

    Today's nice find.

Couple of things about that find:. 1. It looks very small for the usual uses of a billhook. 2. Would think that handle was positively dangerous: nothing to stop the tool flying out of user's hand as a result of centrifugal force. So what would it be used for as it stands?
