    Feeling old

Blimey. I'll not moan about paying £85 for something over 1/2m3 of really dry birch. But won't need any this year, as there are the remains of 5 big firs scattered around various shelters awaiting cutting and splitting. Used to say I had the lifestyle of someone in their 50s, apart from the...

    Elu routers

Just to join the Elu club! Two Mof 177E, one for kitchen work, one in a Ryobi table. At least one 96, a 97 and possibly more. 110V portable planer and, perhaps my favourite, a flipover saw. Incredibly well made, but the weight is getting a bit excessive for my aged muscles!

    Raised Planters.

If you can source it, larch (ideally Siberian but local will do) is pretty good for outdoor use without any nasties. Just made a couple of raised planters for daughter using larch left over from cladding their extension. In this case, the actual plants are in plastic planters so the wood is...

    Tyme Avon Start up

Agree the Avon is a seriously underrated lathe, IMHO. And agree with Rhossydd's diagnosis. The Avon is a clever design with the diamond + square bed bars for accurate location, swivel head and reasonable power. Obviously, it's only an alloy head, but bolted to the thickest piece of...

    Tell me about bandsaws please

How thick is the ali you are cutting? Have you considered a scrollsaw? On my Hegner, blade changing is pretty quick and it will cope with up to 4mm ali without too much fuss; swap blades and it will do something similar with 12mm softwood..

    War office chairs

We are still sleeping in an ex-WD double bed, bought from Bedford salerooms some 40 years ago, and marked with a GviR stamp plus the broad arrow. Quite a pleasant light oak colour, with very thin coat of clear varnish as far as I can tell.

    Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Well done him. I didn't think anyone else of my age would be stoopid enough to fall out of an apple tree! But on the actual topic, I lost one of my best friends to an undiagnosed aortic aneurism. The OP has the chance to avoid this; get the surgery done

    Hornbeam

Hmmm. Pehaps I'd better have another look at the receipt!

    Hornbeam

20-something pounds. Most places seem to put the threshold higher than that, so I was pleasantly surprised.

    NEW Arrivals from Milescraft

Out of interest, what is the quality of their jigs like? We forgot Son-in-law's birthday, so were panicking a bit but daughter said he really wanted their circle cutting jig for his Milwaukee battery router (with which he had recently routed a neat furrow in his thumb!). She's getting it, we...

    Hornbeam

Daughter actually buys quite a lot of stuff from them; apparently it's much better quality than is available in the US. I think she just wants to be able to do really big bracelets on which to hang gewgaws. Rowan is an interesting thought. There's quite a bit in the wood behind our house, and...

    Hornbeam

For speed, decided to order from them, and laminate a bit if necessary. Ordered mid-morning Wednesday, no postage charge and they arrived lunchtime yesterday. Had never used S&B before, but very pleased with the service and the quality of the blanks. They seem to use a company called...

    Hornbeam

Interesting thought; problem is the lathe is over here! Hadn't thought of hickory as being particularly hard, but happy to stand corrected. While fitting my winter tyres, spotted some pieces of boxwood lurking in a corner. Might see if there is enough to laminate.

    Hornbeam

Think the problem is that some of the designs are meant to be "large and floppy" (don't ask me, I'm only a bloke who understands wood, not jewellry. And no, I don't wear an ear/nose or whatever ring!). Have not had a chance to contact Stiles and Bates to see if they could do a bigger blank...

    Hornbeam

Hawthorn is a nice suggestion, but they don't understand hedges up here!! That wouldn't matter greatly, as the customer will surely want more in a year or two!! But an affa lang way from Aberdeen!

    Hornbeam

Are you 100% sure there aren't a couple of logs still lurking in the pile????

    Hornbeam

Someone locally suggested S&B. Might contact them to see if they have anything bigger. We've tried beech, and it isn't quite hard enough. Will probably suggest I skim the existing ones, at least as an interim. Just hoping someone in the south has an odd log in their firewood pile!

    Spitfire Mk.VB

I'll bet if your sister had been a few years older, she'd have trained as a delivery pilot!

    Hornbeam

I'm sure this has been asked before, but search doesn't seem to find anything useful. Daughter in the US needs me to replace the bracelet mandrels made some 20 years ago (they get a bit battered - see pic). The originals are hornbeam, which has the requisite tight grain and hardness. The one...
