Mystery pipe - what to do?

At our last house, the lads who were putting in a new water main using a mole were "persuaded" (used fivers!) to stay on one evening and mole in the armoured cable to my shed 20-30 yards up the garden. Got to just outside the footprint of the shed and went exactly centrally through a land...

    Options etc For Wooden Threads

Never had much success with a(n admittedly cheapo) thread box. Does the OP have a lathe? Have had more success with lathe and thread chasers, which are also, IMHO, easier to make for one-off threads.

    oh dear...

Well. they are made in Norfolk, so story about cupholders for Son-in-Law's Lotus Elise is relevant. Asked my daughter what he might want for Christmas and she said he wishes the Elise had a cupholder. Our friendly neighbourhood Morgan agents had just taken on Lotus as well, so asked if they...

    Dating dressing table

If it were Parana pine, there would be a scent rather like raw carrots when you sand it.

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Agree Hondas (if they really are Hondas, not convincig but carp Chinese copies, DAMHIKT) are generally superior to B&S, but if you want real frustration, try Tecunseh.

    Clear glass splashback?

We saw one in local kitchen centre with big photo behind, which we both liked, but not £200 liked! So got a piece of toughened glass with drilled holes from our local supplier and put a suitably sized photo matte behind it with A3 image 1n it. Keep meaning to change the image from time to...

    Lathe purchase ideas...

Not in the market for a lathe (the Mystro will outlast me and another generation!) but would be interested to know where the castings for the Herald are made. Would be nice to know it's in the UK, but.......

    electric scooters

Apparently they infest the Redways in Milton Keynes, but there is talk of their being made legal off private property in England. They were everywhere in French cities a couple of years ago, GENERALLY being used sensibly. I'll stick to road-legal e-bike.

    All That Glitters ............... BBC

My daughter in the USA made jewellry as a hobby while employed, and now uses it to supplement her pension, so will be interesting to hear what she says if/when it becomes legally available there.

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

My reasoning precisely. According to the sticker on the side of the Landroid, it can be app controlled, but that's beyond the understanding of this old duffer!

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Careful with geese - they can be vicious b*****s, and if you are unlucky, they will convert your grass sward into silverweed (Potentilla anserina - the clue is in the name for dog latin speakers). But they are excellent burglar alarms; our neighbours had them on the farm opposite when we lived...

Early onset Parkinson's disease and woodworking

Oddly, only yesterday found some correspondence from an old friend (once a Rugby international) who developed Parkinsons 7 or 8 years ago. He mentioned one drug which prevents the tremors, but presumably your student has been offered this by her consulant. The other general point he made was...

    Lets talk lawn mowers.

Nobody thought of a robot?? (ah, Essex Barn workshop has) I bought a Worx Landroid off Ebay a couple of years ago and it's the best tool available for an oldie. Just need to level off the spring grass with the heavy old 21" Hayter, then let "Robotup" do the work. We have solar panels, so even...

    Small bench mounted bandsaws

Not really relevant, but does anyone know why the Inca, and all (AFAIK) meat cutting saws are "back to front"? Never tried to use one, but would be interested to know if it has any effect on the way you use them?

Clay on top of 100mm waste pipe OK?

That does remind me of the nightmare, shrinking Oxford clay near Milton Keynes; ended up having one corner of the house underpinned because of shrinking.....

How to remove an immersion heater element?

Be very wary of Unicorns!! Too much leverage and you will have an 'orribly distorted tank. Don't ask me how I know this............

anyone recognise this little, old surface planer?

What width is the planer? Looks the right colour for Coronet machines, but if I remember right, their large planer, the Capitol was only 7". And it's a good 30years since I had Coronet machines......

Big questions, stretching the imagination and no answers

Am I the only one who gets annoyed at the billions spent of space exploration, which will do nothing for this planet (almost certainly won't offer us a bolthole for when we've destroyed this one). NHS? Non-polluting heating? Ditto surface transport? And so on. Grumpy old git personified.

Ash wood - suitability for outdoor projects (and what if it has dieback?)

Offer the timber to Morgan cars! Think they still use ash for the main frames of their sports cars.
