    Consolidated PBY Catalina

Yes, always thought that the Rapide was an incredibly elegant machine. A review in Flight some time in the 70s described it as a "gentleman's aerial carriage". Real Hepplewhite stuff.

Air source Heat Pumps any good?

The general feeling that the cowpersons are jumping into this one was confirmed yesterday when I got a letter "to the householder" offering to get me grant aid for all sorts of wonderful heating and insulation stuff, because "your house has been identified as having very low enerty efficiency"...

    The end of fluorescent lighting

Any idea when in the year this might be?? And has anyone found a replacement for the double-D style fluorescents? We (OK, I) made the mistake of fitting 28W versions in our kitchen extension, and they seem to eat tubes. Got a stash of them which MAY last my remaining days, but it might be...

    Two stroke engines, opinion sought

Funny you should say that! There is a Hayter walk-behind being sworn at outside! It was being chucked out by son-in-law's employers, so he rescued it to maintain paths in the village. Great when it works, but it has a Tecumseh engine which doesn't seem to match any of the model lists and after...

    Two stroke engines, opinion sought

Now even more unsure what to do. Had intended to sell the FS200 to a guy who helps with the garden, but today needed to do some serious strimming, so heaved the beast down from its resting place, started it up and had fogotten just how much "grunt" it had. Felt like it could drop small trees...

    Two stroke engines, opinion sought

Thanks guys! Definitely confused at a higher level. I'd been sort of thinking that maybe the original alloy body was possibly better quality than Chinoiserie, so fitting new gaskets to the old one might make sense, but ..... Sorry to be a total donut, but where is the spark arrestor????

    Two stroke engines, opinion sought

I have a couple of Stihl strimmers, an FS200 which runs like a train, but is getting too heavy for this ancient guy and a much lighter FS66, which runs well when it wants to, then refuses to start, or dies unexpectedly. Suspect there is some sort of carburettor problem. Looks like a Chinese...

    Teaching - Drilling

One of our maintenance staff in my last job had worked in the Wolverton railway workshop and said they used Yankees constantly. I asked him if he'd ever trapped a finger between the handle and the chuck. "Only once"! Says it all!

    Running out of time...

The first post really struck a chord; I'm nearly 79, four more years than my Father managed, but four less than my Mother. Got two forms of cancer, blood and prostate, so probably quite lucky still to be around. The really frustrating thing is that the treatment for the prostate plays complete...

    Mira shower thermostat

Ah. I spoke too soon! Did all the suggestions, on-off seemed to work fine, installed the cassette and this morning went to use it. Several rude words uttered; the thermostat is now stuck firmly on tepid. Good job we have a separate shower, probably ten years older, over the bath!

    Mira shower thermostat

'fraid that looks like a totally different model, but it gives me thoughts! However, one or other of the suggestions given earlier seems to have worked! Will see for how long it continues! Thanks to you clever people.

    Mira shower thermostat

Thanks, guys. Never thought of scale, as our water up here is ultra-soft (like Glasgow, TTTM!) so it's not usually a problem. But has to be worth a try. Have a good time in Spain, TTTM; I'll wait to hear what you've found.

    Mira shower thermostat

Any of you clever people on here ever dismantled a Mira 903:36 cassette off an old (pre-2002) shower? Mine has got steadily stiffer and stiffer to turn on/off. I've tried silicone lube on the thread of the on-off bit, but no difference. The problem is obviously inside the cassette. A...

How to bring 2 tons of wall down single-handed

Oh dear, does remind me of the things we do when young and foolish. Some 50 years ago we lived in an ex-council tip, sorry, house, and the guy who had previously exercised right to buy had built a bizarre, very tall, garage, with a 6" concrete slab as a roof. Decided that would come down easy...

    Strange query

Thanks for the suggestions. Some years ago I built a hand powered version of the blue electric beast, which I used for small areas of drive when there was grass or similar needing cleared. Problem is that several years ago, I was several years younger, and was not on a prostate cancer...

    Strange query

Down the side of many motorways, there are French drains to carry off surplus water. For those not familiar with these, they are basically open channels filled with coarse gravel. Over time, they obviously get silted up and need cleaned. Some 30+ years ago, the son of an old friend/colleague...

    hearing

Just one word of warning if you have "behind the ear" aid. Be VERY careful taking off mask, head torch, even glasses or close-fitting hat. The aid can very easily get flicked out and disappear!! Lost one of mine for an hour or so after trip to compost heap, but fortunately found it just inside...

    Headstock thread adaptor.

Find a guy with a metalworking lathe and ask them very nicely to make one. I've made several, but just no time now.

    hearing

Got tested at Boots about three years ago, when I was 75, and some high frequency loss, but not enough to worry about. Deafness was clearly not helping wife's Alzheimers, so she got tested and had NHS aids, which were OK-ish, but fairly rapidly became inadequate as hearing deteriorated further...

    Withdrawn Drummond B

Looks remarkably like the one that I sold round Milton Keynes 30 years ago! Really nice machine.
