    Flood problems

Back in the 1950s we had a problem with water supply to our house on the edge of the village. Water board guy came out in his van, walked up and down with bent rods roughly where he thought the pipe went and got it spot on. An old uncle of mine was pretty good finding field drains, but only...

Sadly, Essex is an awffa lang way from Aberdeen!

Looks a super job, crispym. Bit of judicious rusting and noone would ever know! As for the seized screw, it sounds like you are getting towards the "drill it out and pick out the bits" stage. I guess you've tried localised heating then sudden cooling and all the proprietory seize releasers...

Have you had your booster *** ?

Had an "interesting" journey over this. As a blood cancer patient, it's possible my immune system is compromised, so got initial jags slightly early via GP. The specialists were then recommending we got a third vaccination as soon as possible. But the rest of the NHS didn't seem to know this...

And another vote for Morso's Squirrel. Brilliant beasts!

    Suggestions for future heating system

Just a couple of points. Someone commented that forced ventilation/heat recovery is difficult to instal. In a bungalow like our's, it's a doddle. Box with fans and heat exchanger in the roof void, ducting to all rooms in the same space. Our's was put in in 2000, and has run continually ever...

    Suggestions for future heating system

Have a slightly similar dilemma; our house is highly insulated (came on a lorry from Sweden) with forced air ventilation and heat recovery. Four bedrooms, big lounge, big kitchen and (heated!!) workshop need about 6kW when it's below freezing. We have a small oil boiler which runs for a couple...

    Britain's Best Woodworker

Yes, have to agree with the frequent comment of disappointing. But that was probably inevitable, as they were trying to interest folk who knew something about woodworking and a general public who (it is assumed) want more of the "human interest" stuff. So probably didn't really please either.

    Bestcombi 2000

Sounds like a broken drive belt to the rollers. Or did the BestCombi have chains? (Whichever, they were really nice machines)

Carry sheet goods on car roof

Have never lost roofrack loads, but have had some near misses from others. Driving down the M6 not long after it was opened, and was probably not speed limited, had to swerve round the entire holiday luggage of a family in the car in front when it detached from the roof rack. Don't envy them...

    Planer identification and history?

From memory, James Inns used to advertise in the back pages of Woodworker, probably in the 60s/70s, along with several other small makers of basic machine tools. Will have a look in my run of WWer (1939-late 80s, mostly bound. And, no, don't want to sell them yet)

Going back to you original post, you said you had mullered the SLOT in the original bolt. This suggests it may have been a countersunk head, 1/4Whit set screw. Or did it have a square head as you suggest later? If you can confirm, it's quite possible there is one in my magic box. Let me know.

Not superior knowledge, but access to my oil-stained Zeus chart (ye gods, the typeface is tiny! Or has my eyesight got worse?) suggests:- If the screws are 1/4 inch OD, then as you've found there is 1/4 20 UNC, which has 20 tpi (for the metric only folks, that's a bit more than 1mm pitch.) In...

Would be surprised if the bolts were Unified. At that period, would expect them to be Whitworth or BSF; sometimes these sizes match with Unified ones, but only rarely. And, of course, if you go to smaller stuff, you've got British Association (BA) or some wondrous strange cycle ones!

Chester 920 - under cross slide nut

Agree it's strange to use what looks like a basic Whitworth thread in that situation. It's quite likely that the screw is worn as well as the nut. Might the OP be best served by replacing the whole feed screw and the nut with a more robust Acme? My guess is that the screw is just a single...

Another “what are these tools for?” thread.

Bone marrow biopsies are part of the WHO diagnosis criteria for some blood disorders, but "my" haematology team in Aberdeen says they should only be used when the result might mean a change in treatment. Weirdly, there's a lot of blood cancer patients who insist that you aren't a "proper"...

S.A.D hitting me early this year

I wish. Ten-tenths cloud cover as the aurorawatch app kept alerting me to the glories that might be up there.

S.A.D hitting me early this year

The one that really gets me is the road out of our village towards the town. About every metre, there is one of those Yakult yoghurt drink pots chucked into the verge. Someone who obviously worries about his (I'm guessing it's a he, but....) internal environment but doesn't give a hoot about...

S.A.D hitting me early this year

Hey, it's not that bad! OK, you do wonder some days when it doesn't get light round Aberdeen until 11:0 am and goes dark again at 3, but even out in the wilds we usually have electricity for lights! And the scenery plus the people make it worthwhile. (I know, gone completely native!)
