    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Well, here is one VERY red-faced, but slightly happier, bunny. Bought a cheapo spark tester and bingo, there seemed to be a perfect spark. Repeated the test with the actual plug, and it sparked too. Why, I have no idea; definitely didn't work when first tested or several times in between. So...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Thanks, Noel. Yes. I saw that post a bit back, but at the time it was just gobbledegook. Now I've learned a bit more, I think it makes sense. In the meantime, have found a supplier of the trigger module in the USA for about £20, so S-i-L is probably getting a commission. Problem with option...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Been researching this some more, and beginning to think my beast may actually have a Bosch unit, as there seem to be trigger modules on the market for the Bosch which look pretty much identical to mine. Unfortunately, the thread on the Arborist site doesn't have a picture of the one he repairs...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Trouble is, I ain't got that size of glutes, and could probably give the operator 60 years!

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Part of the problem is that I'm not sure which maker; suspect it's a very early SEM, as it doesn't look like anything I can find. It does bear a slight resemblance in general shape to the SEM that I THINK was fitted to 048s. Will work through the thread you linked to; even if it's not directly...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Thanks for that. I suspect a working 048 of the right vintage would either not exist(!) or be being offered for silly money. I've got the usual searches out, but if nothing turns up, will probably sell mine for parts (which might even give me a profit!) and get something newer that will do the...

That sounds absolutely brilliant!! Thanks in anticipation.

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

The problem is that the module on the saw, which apparently dates from 1984(!) is a completely different form from the later modules. This one has what I suspect is the electronic bits mounted separately from the magneto coils (that's what makes it look like the gap is wildly out - it isn't)...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

OK, solved the S/N problem, with the aid of Mr Google. It's stamped in tiny digits on a flat bit of metal, hidden under the kickback guard and many, many years of oily crud.

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

My old faithful beast of a Stihl 048AV has been languishing while I've dealt with health issues, but is now needed to deal with some monster Picea abies that had to be felled as being a danger. So of course it won't now start and investigation suggests a dead ignition module. Trouble is it's...

    Solar battery charger

Strangely, that may not be completely true. Although we probably get lower intensity of sunlight, the longer hours in summer compared to Englandshire just about compensate. Recall comparing notes with a forum member in Southampton, and his annual generation was about the same as our's from...

    Solar battery charger

That's an interesting thought - the shed is under some trees, so is far from ideal for solar, but up here the wind is pretty reliable. Wonder what happened to the 12v Lucas Freelight one of the family had on their garage back in the 1950s?

    Solar battery charger

Oh dear; you are straining my principles to the limit! I try to avoid Amazon like the plague it is, but that looks excellent value for the given spec. In answer to gmgmgm, the tractor actually starts almost instantly when the battery is topped up (it's a 12hp Briggs engine, built like the...

    Solar battery charger

My ancient ride-on mower/lawn tractor lives in a garden shed some distance from mains power. Does anyone have any experience of solar powered battery chargers which could be used to keep the battery topped up during longer layoffs? Yes, I know I can (and do) lug the battery to a charger, but...
