    Mystery hand cranked fretsaw?

I had something similar years ago, bought for very little, but also didn't have an apprentice to power it. Totally unusable by one person, I reckon. Wonder where it is now?

    Arc welder Rods/Sticks storage

Suspect some of mine are at least 20 years old, kept in a dry drawer in the workshop. Seem to work fine within the limits of my welding skills. And if the results aren't good, you can always blame the rods!

    Cheap Scarifier?

If you have a rotary mower, you can get scarifier blades for them; I actually keep a very old Hayter just for that purpose.

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

Might encourage him to use the splitting tools, but will keep him well away from chainsaw, having seen the 5mm groove he routed along the top joint of his thumb recently. Won't post the pic of it!

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

Mine was £3 from a local car boot, and has split many species, even some elm with really complicated grain. I find for most species, they split more easily when at least partially dried, unless they've started to rot, when the wedge just sinks in. The same sometimes happens with softwoods...

    Dodged a bullet———almost

Lying around somewhere in our house in the 1950s was an old Golden Syrup tin half full of ignition caps for a percussion action shotgun which lived somewhere else in the family. Put one on the vice and hit it; ears were ringing for a good half hour after.

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

We have had to have 5 big Picea abies felled for safety reasons after the shock of Storm Arwen, so now have a pretty significant stock of trunks, everything from abour 28" diameter down to 8". (hence my questions in another post about my Stihl 048AV!). All piled up against our garden **** at the...

    Fobco star

Heck. And I thought mine was a bargain for £25, some 30 years ago!

    Sapwood-heartwood conversion

Right, got the story a bit straighter now. This is what she now tells me:- "At the bottom of the beech tree the wood was actually splitting apart along the colour change, see picture below. The change in colour went along the branches too - you can see in the picture of a split below. And there...

    Sapwood-heartwood conversion

I'll ask one of them to get a decent picture of a balk from the bottom of the tree and another nearer the top, assuming they've not already split everything for the stove. Their house is on the edge of a steep bluff, and daughter lost control of one large balk which skated over the edge and...

    Sapwood-heartwood conversion

Thanks, SD. Had never really thought about this before, but it's probably not really surprising that the transition should vary between species and within species, depending on the life history. I'll copy your reply to S-i-L; it might take his mind off the broken starter cord on his chainsaw!

    Sapwood-heartwood conversion

Son in Law in Michigan was offered some beech from a storm casualty, and sent me the pic of the first trailerload. He wanted to know what caused the sudden colour change in the cross section, and this set me wondering about the nature of the change from sapwood to heartwood. In these logs...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Don't I know it! 40 or 50 years ago, I had a rotovator with a round head 2-stroke Villiers engine, which was very temperamental. In those, the "seals" were phosphor bronze bearings, which of course wore fairly rapidly. In the end, took it apart, machined out the crankcase on my unbranded...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Interesting pic, Noel. but those are only twigs!! From the serial number, my 048 is supposed to be 1984, but your's looks newer. Been meaning to weigh mine; was wondering whether the 20" Hyundai people are mentioning might be significantly lighter and so more suitable for an oldie. Will check...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Mix was fresh this week! I always try to drain my saws after finishing cutting. This gives fresh fuel each time, but does mean it takes a bit of tugging to get fuel in to the carb. Didn't know about that stabiliser; should be worth a try. Though with the pile of wood that needs cutting, the...

    Drummond Round bed questions

If it's pretty much unworn, you've got a real friend there. I had a flat-bed Drummond for some years, converted from treadle power by a previous owner and it was a great machine. Still not sure why I fell for a Myford Super 7 (apart from it being cheap and in good condition!) and sold the...

    Ancient Stihl chainsaw

Thought you might like to see what the beast (and his Hyundai baby brother) were chopping up this afternoon. The Hyundai was just for a branch which the cowboys who worked on our neighbour's trees had left hanging like a Sword of Damocles over our garden and which got dislodged by gales last...
