    What Wood is This

I'd go for Jarrah too. Took out a gatepost from a neighbour to widen her drive; post must have been in for a good 30 years and was almost completely rot free. It was also that red colour; think another name for it is Red Gum

    Mini Cordless Chainsaw...any good?

Lidl did a special offer on their polesaw a few years ago. Think it's notionally 40V, 8" blade and as Superduner says, works well, if slowly, even at full extension. Came in very handy after Storm Arwen for clearing away brash that had to be removed to get at the fallen trunks.

Squirrels. Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

We are staying lucky so far up here in Aberdeenshire, as the greys that some misguided pillock introduced in 1972 didn't carry the squirrel pox virus that kills reds, so we still have a decent population of reds. Aided, admittedly, by the Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels project, which...

    David Charlesworth

Agree with all the sentiments above. Although we never met, his clear, well written contributions, and particularly his lack of arrogance, will stay with me. A sad loss.

    Construction techniques for van cabinetry

If you want a cautionary tale about camper vans, read "Borderless Collie" by Tamsin Morris. It involves a home conversion of a rackety 1.6 turbodiesel T25, a collie cross lab and some 10000 miles from Scotland via Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, and ultimately a farm job in Spain.

Where? And do they have the tripod leg?

    what happened to Alf

Still using a (highly modified) Lurem combination machine from ?1960s?, an ancestor of their C210. Has all the "faults" complained about above, with extended lever rise and fall on the saw, aluminium table etc.. But what else would do all I need, in the space available, for £50? (OK, had to...

    Aldi DIY special offers

Have wondered about that sort of thing, but don't fancy trying to tote something of that weight around!

    Aldi DIY special offers

Fortunately, the ground in the apple area (can't really call it an orchard) is pretty flat. What I REALLY want is one of those tapering, tripod ladders, but they are well upwards of £250 for a decent one, which is a bit much for 15 trees, and noone seems to hire them out up here. I have a 12...

    Ironwood?

Thanks for that bit of elucidation. I'd assumed it was just casually called ironwood because of its hardness. Now where can my big Stihl find one for the stove?

    Reamer wanted -

IF you have a metalworking lathe, have a look at one of Sparey's books on metalworking. He has some simple designs for taper reamers, if I remember correctly. As I'm guessing the 8" long taper doesn't have to be accurate to a few thou, this should work.

    Aldi DIY special offers

Anybody seen the ladder/scaffold system in the flesh? I've been looking for something to simplify pruning the apple trees, and that's not a bad price if it's any good.

Fobco Pillar/Bench Drill Ebay (poor advert) £50 starting, Royston

As the years take their toll, have been wondering if anyone has ever fixed a raise/lower handle on the table of a Fobco?

Fobco Pillar/Bench Drill Ebay (poor advert) £50 starting, Royston

Glad I paid £25 for mine! Then another £20-ish from Mr O'Brien himself for a used but undamaged table. That was ***** years ago but it's still in daily use.

    Brumock/billhook handle

Perfectionist!! Duct tape is a lot quicker!

    Brumock/billhook handle

Or if you've got the handle off anyway, start from scratch and carve a new one out of a nice straight grained piece of ash. Saturate it with linseed oil, fit it as described above and, as my Grandfather said, and I am increasingly saying "it'll last my bit of time".

    E.E. Lightning F2

Can't remember the details, but read somewhere of a guy birdwatching near the Norfolk coast, and being unable to understand why there was silence, then a tremendous blast of noise from out at sea, repeated several times. Finally discovered it was a Lighning flying towards the coast at its...

    E.E. Lightning F2

There may still be a (non-flyable) one parked on the end of the runway at Cranfield airfield. Went there to die some time in the ?80s? As others have said, incredibly noisy.

    Robot mowers

Which variety of robot is it? My secondhand Worx Landroid seems to be running fine, and their UK agents do try to be helpful. (having said that, goes to window to check in case it's decided to die on me, or got itself wassled up in something)

    Brumock/billhook handle

Not a recommendation, but mine, in similar state, is held together with duct tape, which is surprisingly comfortable! Haven't heard the term Brummock for a very long time! (I'm originally from the Ludlow area)
