    Chess pieces advice?

I have made and sold 3 Staunton sets. They, in my opinion, are traditional and the nicest style as I can't go with all of the fancy stuff. The most surprising thing for me was that the most difficult part was turning the pawns. The first is dead easy then the other 15 have to be the same! Or as...

    Chuck help needed please

I'm confused? Now it's been turned what do you do with it? It seems to be held in a Jacobs chuck by a small nail/

    Chuck help needed please

I don't know if you have sorted your problem of holding the rings, but here's my method. I had to turn 40 curtain rings for a 2" curtain pole and I couldn't get the rings big enough to fit. So I made a simple pinch chuck the fits on my Axminsnter K10 chuck with Odonnel jaws. It gives complete...

    Thread on turning rings?

A short while back I saw a thread on turning rings and the OP was asking about how to hold them to turn the inner surface. I have tried to find it but can't. Had anyone any idea where it is and if so can you post the link for it please?

    Live Centres - Theo Haralampou

Thank you Greg. Given the chance I would turn LV again. These were quite dusty. Probably half of the skittles alley on them, but they were a delight to turn. There are still some marks on them, but as I said it would have possibly made them too small to get rid of them. It gives them character...

All 5 done now and awaiting collection. I was surprised at the smell of the wood, lignum vitae I think. It's the first time I have touched any and it smells quite sweet and left the quite pleasant smell on my hands for ages. The diameter is about 4 1/2" and the weight is dammed heavy :oops...

Well, sooner than I thought I have been using those cup chucks. This time to sort out some, 5, skittles balls that got the worse for wear. Just a couple of bits of pine turned to fit the tailstock and chuck Mount and centralise and spin it to round again 2 of the 5 were in a bad way and...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That's a lovely little job JoggerD. What wood is it and what saw have you got? My first was a little 3 wheel jobbie and it did me well for a couple of years. My other hobby, for 30 odd years now, is model RC gliders. One advantage you have over me is less repairs  I look forward to...

That just about sums it up Robbo. There's a lump of pine as a sacrificial block screwed onto the face plate and the cup center hot glued onto it. The cup is turned after the block is hot glued in place so as to be dead center. To turn the sphere I just turn a cube to a cylinder and roughly...

What diameter sphere are you talking about? I have also used the Axi multi head live tail stock thingy and used it to turn the 5/8" balls for a lazy Susan. I also used the same idea for my 'ball in cubes'. East to do and easy to make. 32 of the things

How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

I'm still here. Still learning and turning after about 25 years. The day I stop learning about it will be the day the lid goes on me-thinks. My CL1 is about 23 years old and just about worn in now. The main difference with it from standard is it's now got a 3ø variable speed motor on it and...
