Hopefully I will get a nice long , even shaving and I will be able to leave the plane as it is 😀 . Thanks to one of the videos Tom provided, the David Weaver one, I now have a lot better idea of the importance of a correctly fitted lever cap.

This I like :D . It was my intention to definitely flatten the sole, now after some good advice from the forum, I’m more inclined to leave it alone as long as it works ok.

Thanks Andy, it’s almost like you knew what my next question would be!:D. I really like the look of the lever caps that have not been plated, just cleaned and buffed up. I have access to buffing / polishing wheel at work but I wouldn’t want to over polish it and make it too shiny.

Excellent build Mike, like the way that you have included the bits that went wrong too, and the bits that you hadn't planned out before hand, and the way you dealt with them. Great inspiration for us beginners.

Tom, I will be looking to flatten the sole of the Bargain Bedrock at some point as it is very slightly hollow, if you would like to add some pointers on how best to do this on the bedrock post, so as not to go further off topic on this post, it would be appreciated.

Thats good, looks like they are the original ones then. No luck finding a bedrock lever cap, the only ones I could find were in the USA and they were too expensive with the shipping. I have managed to find an early stanley one though off a No6 ,off ebay, which I hope will look ok.

So tonight I’ve given the handles a clean with AndyT’s reviver and I’m happy with the results Next question is are they rosewood?

Thanks Andy, will give the boiled linseed oil a try. Possibly rosewood, I will try and post a close up pic when I’ve cleaned them up.

On a visit to the local diy shop last week I found this rusty lump on one of the bottom display shelves. I asked if it was for sale, initially I just wanted the handles, and the bemused assistant said I could have it for a fiver a there were parts missing, deal done! They found it most amusing...
