    Wood Expansion/Shrinkage

Traditional techniques take into account wood movement so you don't have to worry about what moves more than something else. Learn tried and tested construction methods and it doesn't matter what wood you build it from.

    Inspirational books for woodworking

Great question. Some thoughts on a few that I've been through. Sam Maloof, Woodworker. Can't say I found it inspiring or particularly well written but lots of nice images and certainly made me appreciate his furniture more. George Nakashima, The Soul of a Tree. Definitely an interesting...

    Disposal of wood chippings

We produce quite a large amount and give it all to a smoke house, they bring around a bag of goodies whenever they pick the bags up. Look up a smoke house I'm sure they will be delighted to take it off your hands.

    Finish for sycamore

I'll check in work next week. Osmo, as I'm sure you know, do an entire range of tints and whatnot. Some of these are far stronger than others, as in if you leave it too long it will make the wood look like it is painted white as opposed to held at it's natural hue. But anyway I tested a bunch...

Osmo Top or Wax and elbow grease?

Our standard is first osmo wax then a light cut back and at least 3 applications of polyx with a light cut back between applications. The polyx dries quickly, if you get one on first thing you can get another on before you leave at the end of the day. Very easy application.

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Yeah it's too funny, I actually didn't get accepted to Letterfrack when I applied  studied in the UK instead and I'd say in the first two months of being here I got more experience than an entire year at Letterfrack. Ah yeah J Walsh, living the dream in Cork!

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Hey man, yeah getting the car/van on the ferry back and forth is not a cheap (or quick) process but hopefully worth it. How is the Kity Direct Drive going for you? I see a lot of them available over here but have always thought the beds look quite small on the various parts. If you are doing...

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Cheers man, yeah Galway is a beautiful part of the country alright. It's likely there is more opportunity here in the UK but as they say "home is where the heart is"

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Cheers Daniel for the heads up on Spacehub will look into it. Are you saying you can have machinery shipped there and then I would just roll up and drive it down to the republic? That would be very convenient.

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Yeah just in the process of getting a van here in the UK and looking like you need to have owned it for at least 6 months in order to avoid VRT on arrival as you can claim it as part of your personal affects when "relocating to the EU". But yeah just more selection of vehicles and better prices...

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Haha yeah definitely worth a try anyways. Looking like it will be Galway. Bit unsure about getting work in Ireland as haven't lived there in 16 years, when I look for Cabinetmakers in Galway there doesn't seem to be a single one so not sure if that's a good sign or not...

    Importing machinery UK to Ireland

Hi all, Was hoping someone here may have an idea of what the deal is with importing machinery from the UK to Ireland. Basically, been working as a Cabinetmaker in the UK for the last few years and I'm now looking to move back to Ireland and set up my own shop. The loose plan was to stock up on...

Why did furniture makers put their mark on an invisible surface ?

I have to check my book when I get back but I'm sure that at a point in time it was uncommon however with the establishment of larger scale manufacturing in the 18th (possibly 17th century) in France branding ones furnitire was a legal requirement in order to maintain the standards of furnitire...
