Increasing precision for hand mitre cutting.

Well made mitre shooting board is what you need.

Incised letter carving, question about depth of cut

Are you making a central cut and then doing an angled cut on either side? No idea if that's the method you're using but that how I've been shown how to do it. A double bevel to make the central line and then a regular or double bevel to them form the v cut. Perhaps you're making your first...

How to get proper joints to pop when finishing off?

Sand to 400, apply Danish, buff of excess, leave overnight, repeat for a total of 3 coats. After each coat you have to buff harder as it sets quicker. This is straightforward and will give you an excellent bright and natural finish the adds depth to the wood.

    No No's on projects

    Japanese Toolbox

Is the wedge a traditional thing or is it more of a YouTuber, hobbyist thing? Like I said, there is no mention of it in Toshio's book where he describes how a traditional toolbox is made. If the lid is fit well, which they are, they don't slide around. I did think about the wedge thing but if...

    Japanese Toolbox

Well some updates. Last day in work and just got the boxes finished on time to pack everything into them. Made them all from 18mm birch ply, really didn't have the time to be making it out of solid, but a few late evenings and it all came together pretty quickly. Just screwed and plugged...

    Japanese Toolbox

Cheers everyone for the information. Yeah, a pretty basic design but just wanted to ask on here in case there was something I may have been overlooking. Came across Toshio's book shortly after posting, in and of itself quite an interesting read, he doesn't even bother with the wedge. Anyway...

    Japanese Toolbox

Hey everyone, Just wondering if anyone knows of any decent sources for information on how traditional Japanese toolboxes are actually made? Would like to make one in the next few weeks but having a hard time finding legitimate information. YouTube is overflowing with people making...

    Dirty looking finish on walnut.

How did you apply the Danish? One coat won't give it much shine/depth. Usually when using Danish and wanting to make the most of the finish you want to sand it to 400, and use 3 applications. You need to buff it off very soon after application, leave it overnight repeat again, and then another...

Shared shop space in around Glasgow?

Hi everyone, Was hoping someone on here might have some leads on any shared workspaces/bench space available in a cabinetry/private shop in or around Glasgow? Been working as a cabinetmaker for the last 3 years but looking to get my own work on the go when I move up there in January. Tried...

Is a satin finish REALLY preferred over gloss?

We just finished repolishing an enormous dining table. For one person I think there were about 50 hours on the job. There are very very few people willing to spend that sort of money on a table just to be refinished when that alone will get you a brand new one. Also, it requires a huge amount of...

    Shoulder planes, which one?

I strongly recommend you look at the Clifton 3110, it's a shoulder plane you can also use as a bullnose and chisel plane. Buy new or find a used one depends on how much you want to spend. If I didn't already have a shoulder plane that is the one I would be buying, two of the other Cabinetmakers...

For Sale Brand new Veritas PMV-11 chisels

Hi everyone, Two of the handles broke on my PMV-11 chisels cracked while chopping out mortices recently, it was 40mm oak and there were 24 of them so I was probably asking a bit much of them. After switching to a mortice chisel things went much more smoothly. I contacted LV where I had bought...
