    Thanks Duncan, I had a look at that today. Checked face of register and it was true....however I did notice the chuck insert is not sitting back on the face...the bore is near enough same size and the spindle register runs out....thread variation causes chuck to skew. I made up a washer to sit...

    Thanks for the reply...I tried today to check spindle runout....the morse taper runs within 0.001”...but the spindle register is up to 0.008” out. Taking into account the thread limits I used some prefer tape and made a more tighter fit...no difference. I thnk it’s my bad luck the spindle thread...

I have just bought myself a 3xact chuck for my old Sealey SM42....wondering if anybody has ever had problems with the spindle of this machine...The morse taper seems to run true but when anything is screwed onto the nose there seems to be a runout on said item. There isn’t much play...

    Thanks for reply.. I meant it looks like a split across end face and I painted it with pva .... I just tried to remove the bark but noticed the end split.....I would like to make a vase from it but I’m a bit weary now to carry on... Is it worth face off to see if crack/split disappears ? Thanks

    Hello all.....help required choosing a chuck....I have an old Sealey SM 42. Ok not the most clever of lathes but it works.... Turning up to 12” I am wondering what the best chuck would be. Taking into account size and bearings of this old beast....I am thinking the sc4 chucks maybe too heavy...

I have one of these good old machines...some good comments as regard your problem...firstly shoot some wd40 up the spindle tube and leave a day or two to soak in..the try using a metal rod and tap with hammer.this should remove the drive.if not repeat and try again.once removed you...

    Thanks tris......ive been looking and it seems the RP sc3 could be the choice...especially with the insert.also having read about it...the details suggest it could hold up to a 10 bowl...this being the ideal swing for my old machine... Steve

    Hi robbo Yes I am an ex engineer...45 years in aerospace....thanks once again for the advice... I presume most jaws fit this chuck... I have also manage to turn something with those chisels I got off gumtree...ok not maybe too technical but small acorns eh... Steve

    Greetings everyone Just popping a note regarding the choice of chuck.....I am looking at the Xact range and the 3” self centre got one looks good.however I think maybe the 4” 4jaw independant might prove more use in the long run... I am running a Sealey sm42 with 3/4 16 tpi spindle...
