How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

Still turning but my lathe also doubles up as a sanding station with big disk and a table mounted on it. Also runs my metal polishing mops, so gets lots of use

Random Orbit Sanders - which one is best

Another thumbs up for the Mirka Deros - I know it costs more but haven't regretted it for a minute. Dust collection is amazing / near total.

Dumb Router Question - Which Direction....

First time I cut a groove wider than the router bit, using two passes on the router table, I fired a large piece of wood into the garage door at some speed !! That is a lesson I haven't forgotten.

    Game Changing Tools

My personal game changer was a reasonable table saw and a Kreg mitre gauge - for the first time I was able to cut absolutely square.

    Penguin Donkey

With the end on diagram and the dimensions also quoted you can use sketchup to scale up to size and then read the various angles and other dimensions directly from sketchup. I did it for a designer chair design I wanted to copy. Step one is to import the picture into sketchup, I then traced over...

    Fine Woodworking back issues

As above - if you click on "join" on the website the different options are explained. Unlimited access looks to cost $99 at present.

    Kirsty’s homemade Christmas

Well this prompted me to hunt out the program - it was even worse than described on here, how we didn't see a gouge cartwheeling round the shed I will never know (perhaps they edited that bit out). The other daft thing was giving Kirsty a large, square block of timber to start knocking the edges...

    Crown tools?

I've just bought two Isles gouges and yes maybe the bevel might be very slightly uneven but they work superbly, which is surely all that should count.

"Between the motorbike and the table saw" now that's a phrase I recognise !

    Combination or separates

Slightly off topic but the first thing I did in my garage was to change to side hinged doors instead of up and over. This enabled me to install a sill with better weatherproofing and put insulation board on the inside of the doors. The result was a comfortable temperature throughout the winter -...

    Purveyors of coveted items

I always find the biggest challenge is in finding decent mid-rangetools. There is a mass of cheap/poor tools made down to a price and sold either on-line or in the DIY sheds or alternatively the hign end tools. The manufacturers who used to sit between the two extremese seem to be moving down...

Lack of Woodworking programs on TV

I don't think he has been mentioned before in this topic but Thomas Johnson Antiqeu Furniture Restoration is really good, I've picked up loads of useful ideas from it. He is a proper craftsman.

    Advice on Bending small bars/rods

I'd endorse Metalcraft tools as well, you will find yourself making all sorts of other things. I've had loads of fun with it, well worth the relatively modest investment. Alternatively a Clarke Compact Bench Mounted Parts Bender from Machine Mart would do it, less tha £100.

    Scheppach planner/thknesser problem

Have a look at the feed rollers as well. The surface on the rollers had degraded quite a lot over time on my Dad's Sheppach thichnesser, which led to me replacing them.

UK & Ireland TIMBER YARDS - PLEASE Add Your Favourites

The self selection idea sounds good because I used to use them but stopped when they basically said they were too busy to bother with me, even though I only ever bought stuff as stocked and dimensioned it myself. They are local so I would like to get back to using them.

    The wonder of the domino

I've just read Simon Winchester's fascinating book as well - perfect present idea for anybody on this forum !

    The wonder of the domino

Interesting debate here, which has some similarities to the film v digital argument which raged in the world of photography (it might still be raging !). My Domino has encouraged me to tackle a range of projects which I wouldn't have done before. I can do joints in other ways but haven't got...

Blacksmithing Courses - Functional rather than artisanal?

I did a day with Julian Wadsworth in Huddersfield. Mine was actually welding but he does blacksmithing as well (large scale stuff too !). He is local to you and was a really good teacher, I can recommend him.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Less than 60 workshop days until Christmas ! Easy to do but a great way of using those small hardwood offcuts which I can never bring myself to throw away.
