    Old jointer

Try a short length of roof guttering. You get 3" mini flow from B@Q. I made one for my old planer as I managed to misplace it. Alasdair

Diamond or oilstone/wetstone for sharpening hand planes etc and what grade.

Results I am getting are good although no idea what grade of stone I have. Its probably as old as the planes. I did a bit of research and reckon stone will give finer edge rather than diamond but will tend to wear. I got the guide just to get the angle correct as they all had been badly...

Hi there looking for advice on sharpening stones etc. Have been learning to properly sharpen some old stanley/draper planes and been using an old very worn oil stone (its so worn its very dipped in the middle although still flat accross the stone)with angle guide for plane. Getting pretty good...

    Old furniture wood reclaiming

Nice tool chest. The amount of beutiful wood thats thrown away is criminal. I am sure some of the older wood is much superior in quality and grain density to new and being free does help a lot. Just goes against the grain (excuse the pun) to see it going to waste. Hoping to encourage my son who...

Is old paint and varnish etc likely to damage the blades? I am rebuilding a thicknesser but the blades are almost obsolete and cost a fortune to replace and have to come from Germany Alasdair

Kity 638 Planer Thicknesser Belt Being Shred Coming Off

Sorry just thought if you are using a puller make sure that you protect the thread in the shaft! I usually use an old socket so the end of bar on the puller cant wreck the threads If you damage that then new motor. Another thought although temporary you may be able to insert washers as shims...

    Old furniture wood reclaiming

Did think of stripper but its horrible to use and messy. I still have nitromorse etc in the shed. Another option was a heat gun/blow torch. The blow torch is quick but you can scorch the wood easily and the electric heat gun I have would take ages. A scraper sounds like an idea. My dads old time...

Kity 638 Planer Thicknesser Belt Being Shred Coming Off

The metal wedge is the key to stop the pulley turning by itself. It locks it to the drive spindle I would think you would need pullers if its tight but also be careful if the pully is really tight you can wreck alloy pulley trying to remove it. A small amount of heat on the pulley only may help...

    Old furniture wood reclaiming

Hi there have a random source of furniture ie tables etc. Whats the best way of removing old paint varnish etc if I want to re use the wood. My friend clears houses and sells antiques and quite often gets old hardwood tables pianos etc that are being skipped. He just gave me a couple of solid...

    New Fence Posts?

Most square posts even pressure treated wont last as long as the old fashioned treated ones. I know a few fencers and they all say about 5-10years max with some lasting less. You do get guaranteed posts upto 15 years from some companies but chances are they wont be around in 15 years. If its an...

Veneering - Issues with (what appears to be) Mould

You could try BAC50. I normally use it for moss/lichen control on exterior timber. Its clear but not sure if it would leave staining. I get it from Benzalkonium Chloride - Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride - BAC 50 Alasdair

Grey dust extraction hose - can you still buy it?

Only reason I was looking at water suction hose as had the waterboard out last year for a major mains burst. They were using honda portable pumps with green hose that seemed to remain the same length even when the suction inlet got blocked. Was fairly flexible and looked really heavy duty. Not...

Grey dust extraction hose - can you still buy it?

I am looking as well as just got a dust extractor. Seen the clear ones but they seem pretty light weight. Been looking at heavy duty suction/delivery hoses they use on farms, dirty water pumps etc...

Oil or grease on radial arm saw moving parts

Thanks for the info re silcone. I reckon PTFE light oil is what I need. The saw has been sitting for years, Its also never really been used much either. Its in very good condition with no wear at all. With sitting in an old steading every adjustment has become very stiff or seazed . Have taken...

Oil or grease on radial arm saw moving parts

Thanks for that I didn't think of silicone. Just worried the bearings etc will get gummed up with dust. Any particular silicone lube you use? Alasdair
