    Making a wooden butter churn.

Whiskey barrels etc absorb the moisture of the contents and swell up to seal themselves. If you have an empty one and let it dry out too much it becomes loose and can leak and fall apart. I assume that butter churns are perhaps glued or internally sealed with something as they are generaly empty...

    Insurance

Watch out for the small print regarding security. My commercial/home insurance wanted 5 lever locks and security doors and a specific grade of padlock etc. It also needs a wiring check etc There is also a limit to the maximum amount covered per item. If its worth more than say £500 it has to be...

    Studding detector

Have tried a few but they dont seem to last. The battery usualy leaks by the time I use it again. They also don't seem to like foil backed plasterboard. I tend to tap the wall to see where its solid behind and avoid areas above sockets etc.

    Stanley No 4 1/2 restoration

Hi there just did an old one of my dads that was seized soid. I removed the wood handle and knob then left it in a bucket of diesel/parafin for a while which soaked in and managed to release them. I wouldn't put the wood in though. Alasdair

Advice needed for installing tv in the workshop

I would think modern flatscreen tv should be ok. Theres very little heat and as long as any vents have some protection with foam (not too dense) it should be ok. You could always build it into a cabinet which should protect it more with vents in the cabinet protected with foam like you get in...

How long did it take you ( or your students) to learn to cut gapless dovetails

Havent done them in 30 years since school. My old woodwork teacher made us practice marking them out and then cutting to the line on old scrap wood for ages before we tackled the real thing. I got it pretty good after a while. Probably forgotten most of it by now though.

PUR Black Gun Foam and copper mesh for keeping out rats

I used corugated iron sheet cut in half lengthways and then buried it 12"" down to stop them digging under it. Also laid slates around the shed as well. Works very well. You can see them attempting it but they never bother going deep enough to get under. There are very few things they wont chew...

    Parkside Table Saw Fence

You could always extend the length of the fence and use a quick release clamp on the table at the rear of the saw to clamp it in place. It would be quick and easy to clamp and unclamp when adjusting. I dont think you would get a clamp with the reach to catch the fence at the moment.

    Refurbish advice.

Pressure washer is good but some are very powerful and can cut into the timber and mark it. Best to keep back from the wood a good bit. I did my dads as his were covered in lichen I sprayed them with a decking cleaner first then a quick power wash and then used 3m abrasive pads (cant remember...

Diamond or oilstone/wetstone for sharpening hand planes etc and what grade.

Come to think of it I use my hand automatically as well with my pruning knives. I own a garden nursery and my hands are like leather/Asbestos. Probably too rough for a decent edge though but also pretty near splinter proof. Alasdair

    Mystery item - tester/microscope

Its interesting. Looks very like what my dad used to use for inspecting photographic prints he made. Found out PT barclay was bought out and I think they now specialize in the repo of ancient maps. Perhaps its used for looking at detail on old maps. The clear area at the base would be to let...

Diamond or oilstone/wetstone for sharpening hand planes etc and what grade.

Found another stone which is very fine. Managed to get an edge on one of old planes that would shave the hairs of your arm. The leather strop was a good idea for chisels as well. I pick diamond plates up in lidl from time to time. They also do pencil type
