Not sure what to finish with?

Stick with the oil alone no dust. Soak it first then blow off as much as possible wipe with a kitchen paper towel , let it dry and then thin coat again blowing off as much as possible. 3 or 4 coats should do it. Cheers Andrew

Not sure what to finish with?

I think brittle is the problem, so anything that soaks into the wood will help to strenghten it. Come to think of it you could use really thin super glue to strenghten it. It can get a bit messy and you have to have plenty of acetone to hand for any spills and hand cleaning. Wipe it on with a...

Not sure what to finish with?

Go with danish oil. I'd let it soak for an hour in the oil and then give it a week or two to really dry hard, or use some of that stuff for hardening rotten window sills (can't remember what it's called but it was in a can very thin and made the wood quite when I last used it about 20 years ago...

FedEx - the most spectacularly incompetent carrier of them all !

Lucky it wasn't a 1958 les paul standard ! I had a guitar go out by ups and they insisted that they do the packing otherwise they wouldn't be liable for any damage, they still managed to destroy the guitar and when a claim was put in they said it wasn't properly packaged !! Duh! Cheers Andrew

    Block Planes

An Old stanley 60 1/2 with a japanese blade is the dogs B********S I got one 40 years ago and still use it, got a spare as well. Bought a lie nielsen but it was a bit big in the hand and the indentations at the side are way too small to get a good grip. It's a shame it's so hard to find the...

Grain fill black palm next to maple.

Hi Steve It looks quite nice to me. The only qualms i'd have is the shellac is not a very resistant finish to marking. A bit of felt under the chess pieces might be an idea. Cheers Andrew

    Got any recommendations for squares?

Thanks for that. It just reminded me that my father had one of those when I was young (He was an engineer working for Wimpeys (not the hamburger bar) I'd completely forgotten about it. Cheers Andrew

Grain fill black palm next to maple.

Hi Steve Just a point. If you do want to use normal (ie rustins oil based grainfiller) you had the right idea in your first post using a sealer on the maple (I'd use cellulose laquer instead of shellac) and make sure it's dry before grain filling. It's some thing I use when finishing rosewood...

Grain fill black palm next to maple.

If your not looking for a contrasting grain fill, wipe over the whole board with medium thickness super glue with a piece of foam/sponge. It's important to try different bits of foam as some will set off very quickly with the super glue. I've had good results with the dark grey or black foam...

What type of glue for a workbench?

Well i've been making and repairing guitars since 1976 and i've had enough repairs to do with bridges lifting with white glue and people do leave their guitars in cars or in dry rooms (I doubt that's a problem in the UK where I was born and lived for 30 years) titebond will also give up in high...

    New Titebond glue

I've used titebond extend (the light yellow cream coloured stuff) and it works very well and dries harder than titebond original. Only problem is it's shelf life is not as good as original and is a bit harder to find (here in Austria) Not used the 2 extend but I think that is more PVA like +...

What type of glue for a workbench?

Try gluing a bridge on an acoustic guitar with white pva and see how long it holds out in a car on a sunny day! I've used titebond original for over 40 years for making guitars and never had a problem. I've also still got my first ever classical guitar that I made and the joints were glued with...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

Watching him turn those ply discs on the router put the wind up me. I`ve seen how one of those big cutters can grab and throw wood (in my case an electric guitar body grabbed the end grain and threw the body into just below the trouser belt line (you all know where) luckily it wasn't me) what...

Black stains after stripping oak table - any suggestions?

Hi Tim You've done a great job on that. The warm colour on the top is really good. Just watch out for sloshing red wine on it as it goes really deep into oak (don't ask me how I know) Cheers Andrew

    Router for CNC machine

The right file output is not for the axbb-e controller but for the software you use to drive it which will be UCCNC or one of the mach 3 or 4 versions. The sofware you use to design your project will give you the right output files via its postproccesor as g code (there is quite a list of...

*Amateur* How do you finish Birch plywood?

For preparation light damping of surface with a moist sponge , leave to dry and sand down lightly with 320 - 240 abrasive (good quality) I would use an acid catalyst laquer satin finish 2 coats 1st thin and rubbed down to give a smooth surface 2nd to give build and protection. Keeping the dust...

    Joke thread

Tramp walks over to a paint shop opposite his park bench. He walks up to the counter and asks the assistant if he can have a bottle of methylated spirits. The assistant says "I know you, your'e one the alcoholics from the park opposite, i'm not selling it to you to drink" The tramp says to him...

    Startrite 352 bandsaw

Thanks for that link Mike, I bought my 352 from Tyzacks in Old St I think it was about 1980 450 quid at the time and it's done sterling service. I've resawn 8inches rosewood with it although it does struggle a bit and cuts out on and off with such thick cuts in hardwood but it will do it. I...

Wax over Danish oil , how soon?

I think you're going to have to wait a week or so. You should really only put on a coat per day as the oil dries mainly by oxidization, I think once it's hard to the touch then your good to go with the wax. Cheers Andrew
