    Les Paul Style Guitar Build

You want to watch out that you don't overradius the edges when doing your FB camber. Your bass side looks a bit overcambered and your fret ends don't look like they're seating well. You might get problems with the strings catching under the fret ends, or if you file over the fret ends you might...

    Les Paul Style Guitar Build

I learnt the trick abouit not too tight frets slots years ago when I refretted a really nice 335 1964 that I had to do twice because the frets just didn't want to stay down. I used some slighty narrower tang tretwire and the frets went down and stayed down. I noticed that on some early 60's...

Put some paste wax on the fb before putting the frets in (rub it in across the grain to stop too much going in the fret slots) and don't rub it too much. And thatll make any (most) glue spatters that appear pop off when they are hard. Try and make the fret slots not too tight as strangely enough...

I'm not sure if I would use copper sulphate as its green, Maybe hydrogen peroxide would be a reasonable alternative and easily available. Cheers Andrew

Watch out using too much glue as it will soften the celluloid and then shrink it as it dries below the fb level if your'e unluky, and this could take a week or so to happen !! One hundredth of an inch is not much and a bit of sanding should level things up. Whats the point of the pore filler? or...

    Steel rules

Fischer rules are tops. I've been using 60cm 2FT ones for years. Easy to read and don't rust and accurate and well priced. I even bought some shorter and longer ones because I liked them so much. Just a shame they don't do an 18" one. (I'm not connected to the company apart from usin the rules...

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

I got a laguna resaw king and then found the German supplier and got both I've only tried the German blade so far and it cuts 8 " hard maple very easily but as you have found it pulls to one side. I have had sucess using a kreg resaw fence guide the 7" one with a curve in the face and just...

Inlay before fitting the neck, it makes it much more handleable. Youv'e got some nice curly maple there, it costs an arm and a leg to get American maple shipped to Europe Spiral cutters work much better with figured woods as they reduce splintering. That won't be seen under the fingerboard...

Routing thick end grain at the table

On a guitar you mount the template above the guitar and use a hand router and alter the cut dirrections as appropriate and use very fine cuts and a heavy router or use a pin router (hard to find these days. Cheers Andrew

Routing thick end grain at the table

Hi Val I would really be happy for you to be able to count to 10 with both hands. I would deffinitely not use a router especially like that on a table router. We tried to do something similar with a mini electric guitar 40mm about 30 years ago, the cutter grabbed the end grain and threw the...

    Les Paul Style Guitar Build

I had a similar occurence years ago when I was cutting a spacer for a p90 pickup on my bandsaw. It started to smoke, luckily I had cup off tea on the saw table and managed to dunk the part in it before it went up in flames !! Also had an ocasion where a roll of tracing/drawing paper started to...

    Les Paul Style Guitar Build

Thanks for the info. I've had some pearloid from them a few years ago and it was good. In fact most of their stuff is good and prices are reasonable, the only problem being getting hammered by the shipping and duty taxes here in europe which adds up to about a third on top of the whole order...

Routing thick end grain at the table

Use a sander. That long cutter is going to grab that end grain and take your fingers off if your unlucky. If you must use a router then us a smaller 8-10 mm (spiral) cutter and take very light passes. You might need a couple of cans of spinach before hand to help hold the router. Good luck...

Making holes in dovetail saw blade for handle, high carbon alloy

All you need to do is clamp 2 pieces of hardwood on both sides of the saw and drill through the wood and saw blade, obvoiusly a good quality hss drill ( a cobalt drill would most likely work) the 2 pieces of wood will support the drill and stop the drill pulling when cutting through thin metal...
