Is a satin finish REALLY preferred over gloss?

I've seen enough thick nitro, Fender were guilty of that in the vintage reissue guitars in the 80's 90' Thick finish is a safety feature to give the guys polishing a margin to work with. The early Fender finishes were probably done with a fair amount of in between coat sandings which leaves a...

Is a satin finish REALLY preferred over gloss?

I'm having breakfast on an oak table that I danish oiled and the depth of figure looks great, if I had high glossed it with polyester it would feel like having a piece of glass over it. Guitars I make are usually done high gloss with cellulose which is piano like at the beginnining and then...

    Hand held electric planer advice

Most of the big acoustic guitar making companies use vacuum bags for gluing down the struts and bridges ! I'm always a bit hesitant with vacuums that if you lose the vacuum the part goes flying off! cheers Andrew

    Hand held electric planer advice

Your wood should not buckle unless you've clamped the front. Clamp the wood behind the plane. Try a low angle block plane well sharpened, it might help. Double sided tape and the belt sander will work if you stick it to a piece of laminated chipboard /mdf glass or anything flat and hard...

    Camera problem

You could try blowing some air from the outside when the zoom is extended if dust is the problem. I think if you take it to a camera dealer they will tell you it's unrepairable or to expensive to fix and try and sell you something new (we live in a throwaway society these days! although here in...

    Camera problem

Thats quite an old model. It maybe that the focus mechanism has some dirt dust etc. restricting it's movements. A can of compressed air might help blow out any debris. It could also be that the battery is getting a bit weak/old Canon did make a power supply for that model. It was quite...

    Weird pattern inside some maple?

I tried that, it worked a little. I'm still tossing a coin to choose which side becomes the face. The weathers hot here in Austria at the moment so i'll take a chance and put it the wood in the sun for a bit. Cheers Andrew

    Weird pattern inside some maple?

I'm not sure what that is, but I had something similar with a really nice piece of curly (Flamed for us Brits) maple which I resawed down the middle only to find grey/brown staining on the inside surfaces. I have a strong suspicion that it was caused by how the wood was kiln dried. I had the...

    Best kit in my workshop

I got mine new from Parrys or Tyzacks in old st. 450 pounds (probably early 1980's) it's so long ago I can't remember exactly which shop it was. I just updated it with a carbide resaw king blade which I got from Canada €250 with all the post and taxes and as usual found a German supplier of...

Mystery - Bench top Table Saw parts

I think that fence piece is to set the end point of the fence back towards the feed end to reduce the chances of pinching and kickback.?? Cheers Andrew

    Double sided tape

Use the superglue masking tape trick. Tape a surface on your workbench. Put tape on the underside of your workpiece . Spread some super glue on one side of a taped surface spray activator on the other taped surface and push down. The super glue holds the 2 pieces together but the masking tape...

    Quiet random orbital sander

Well First reply to your question I don't think your going to find any thing under a 100 pounds thats going to be quiet unless you go for an air powered sander ( ) but then your going to have to put a compressor somewhere out side. Any particular reason you need to talk over the running...

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

I think if none of the solvents work painting it with something like Fiebings leather colour in as close as possible to the shade of the cream on the case and wiping it off(or even leaving it on if done carefully ) Worth a go?? Cheers Andrew

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

Hairspray is a thin laquer, I don't think it's going to work on a soft tolex finish and might even seal it into the tolex Cheers ANDREW

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

Try some orange oil. If you want to use cellulose thinners then mix it with some lemon oil to stop it melting the tolex and wipe it off quicly as it will melt the tolex or whatever they use these days. Alcohol should dissolve the sharpie ink somewhat. What I have found works on removing glue...
