    Mitre Saw

I too have an Evolution Rage sliding mitre saw. Been pretty reliable over the years I've had it. But it has its limitations: great for construction work like cutting studs etc and no worries about hitting nails or staples when using the multi purpose blade. But, don't expect it to do really...

Thanks cabinetman. Good idea. I've also been thinking about a loose tenon. Just trying to work out which method gives me the best structural/watertight solution

    Finger-joint router bit?

Agree, spiral upcut bit would be my recommendation. Anything else will end up with tearout. It wouldn't be wasted anyway as you could then use it for superior dado and rabbet cutting

Cans or Bottles, Can you tell the difference?

Ah, memories of drinking cans of special brew and Tennant's extra (aka "electric soup") in the graveyard with my mates .... Happy days

    Cordless drill

Makita every time. Love their tools. They seem to hit the price/performance ratio spot on. If money is no object then Milwaukee or festool. Cordless tools are like cameras and inkjet printers. You get tied in to a brand. The batteries (lenses, ink cartridges) are where the profit is made

    Self adhesive real wood veneers.

I have some experience with this stuff. I built a set of high quality hi-fi speakers about 3 years ago. Made from 18mm MDF. The goal was to produce a pair that sounded top notch AND looked good as well. After some research online about veneers and veneering (never done it before) I settled for...

Things you can't dent with the spouse

And that every possible requirement for a knife in the kitchen can be fulfilled with a bread knife! I sharpen my kitchen knives with ceramic rods with an occasional grind on a whetstone. She just uses them once and throws then in the stainless steel kitchen sink when she's finished then wonders...

    Rutlands mini table saw

Rutlands are now selling a mini table saw: 300mm x 300mm table size with 80mm blade for £240. This would be ideal for me as I make small wooden boxes. Its marketed as a precision tool and includes a 0.001mm increment digital readout for the fence setting. Having purchased gear from Rutlands in...

    Smart home display stopped working

Never really understood the fascination with smart meters. Billions of pounds spent trying to get these installed in homes throughout the UK. Supposedly they help consumers to reduce energy usage (good thing) but in practice the savings are minuscule. If you want to save energy then just follow...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

I remember when there where only 2 channels on TV. BBC & ITV and you needed separate aerials to receive the signals. Kids TV consisted of "Children's Hour" 5 - 6pm. Blue Peter with Valerie Singleton and Christopher Trace, Animal Magic (god bless Johnnie Morris!) Tales from the River Bank, and a...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Fiddling the Post Office (before BT came along) As kids going out in the evening we used to have a pre-arranged code so that 2 rings from a preselected public telephone box meant that we wanted to come home. Mum/Dad would then come and collect us in the car (Morris Traveller!) Mind you, we often...

    Oak veneered ply

Just pricing up a job for a customer who wants a new bookcase. Looking to make this out of oak veneered ply with solid oak trim and facings. Could anybody recommend a supplier? Happy cut the material myself but (if the price is right and the cuts accurate) happy to let the supplier cut the...

    1/2 router recommendation

I use a Makita RP2301FCK. Built like a tank but surprisingly light to use. Comes with a good accurate micro adjustable fence.

    Useful knots to learn.

Absolutely MikeK "throwing a bowline" with one hand around your waist may well save your life. Bowline on the bight is a good one too, makes a very effective harness. Had to do these and many others blindfolded when training at BRNC Dartmouth in the 80s
