    Lie Nielsen tools

The metalurgy post is very informative and goes to illustrate my argument of an arms race. When I first began making tools, I started using A2 as everyone said it’s the cats meow. But did notice issues empiricaly as stated in DW post. I still have a few chunks laying about. when I began making...

I will say this as someone who has done quite a bit of tool and die work making jigs and tools. I enjoy working with A2 anneal. It machines easy on the lathe and the mill. But is it an edge tool steel? It’s quite good at resisting wear in dies. My own experience in using it has found the...

What LN needs to do is release a video showing what is going on. Show the world the truth to sqash the speculation. I will not buy from a company I cannot pronounce. China is communist and Chinese industry will short cut if you close one eye. I do not trust them. Upon inspection of my new LN...

Very good replys guys. It is true what has been said about Maine. One reason I am considering moving there. During the last few administrations we saw gun control become an issue. Ammunition sales went crazy and folks bought everything before it even hit the shelf. Olin who makes ammunition...

I own one Clifton plane… a small shoulder plane.. the 410. It’s every bit as good as LN but not as sexy with no manganese bronze. But it’s at least 30 years old. There was a recent buyout of Clifton and I am not sure what that means. The bench planes I looked into were finished out in green...

    Lie Nielsen tools

I am beginning to worry about this. I have been after two planes. The 5.5 jack and the 51 shooting plane. Scan the website almost daily. They did complete a small number of 5.5 planes and I ordered one almost immediately even though my name had been on the waiting lists. I never got the email...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

Now I am curious. LN uses manganese bronze. In general bronze is copper and tin. Brass is copper and zinc. Where things get strange is that manganese bronze is a copper zinc alloy. So wouldn’t that be a brass? Phosper bronze is copper and tin with a tadof phosphorus. It’s confusing is it not?

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

Don’t quote me on this as it’s been a while since I looked at the yellow metal used by LN. I believe it’s manganese bronze. We all like bargains but I personally draw the line. LN is a socially responsible and environmentally responsible company. They ceased coconolo wood when the lumber...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

As I mentioned, I had a brain fart. Meant to say zinc instead of tin. Getting technical! Bullet brass is C260. A general purpose brass like some brass bar and sheet is C360. Bronze is a mixture of copper and tin. Copper is one of the more difficult metals to machine. It’s like putting play...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

My bad. I meant to say zinc instead of tin. Sorry about that. Lack of sleep.

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

In surfing the internet in search of photos and data of the Stanley 52 chute board, my newest reproduction project, I came across a Luban block plane. The main name is one I can’t spell but starts with a Q. At first glance it looks like a copy of the Lie Nielsen plane but then it hit me. Under...

The Warrington Chest. Patternmakers Tool Chest and Tools 1888.

The following photos show the 52 board. The 52 was sold as a combo including the 51 plane. Doing cast aluminum is one thing. Being able to cast iron is a totally different animal. Clarke Esterling of windy hills foundary does iron on YouTube. The issues are 1). How to get up to the 2800 degrees...

The Warrington Chest. Patternmakers Tool Chest and Tools 1888.

I ordered this book several months ago and it is lovely. What is interesting is that the chest follows the cabinet makers or joiners chest of drawers. As a part time pattern maker, it’s quite interesting to get a read on the tools and ultimately the techniques used prior to the industrial...

Getting an Old Pigsticker Ready for Work

What an awsome cartoon. Years ago I posted a video on how to thread with the hardinge HLV lathe. The HLV does not thread like most lathes ad it’s different. I bought this lathe at auction years ago. The last price Hardinge had on it was about 150,000 dollars!!’ Not knowing how this lathe works...

    Table saw safety

Using a table saw assumes you have been trained. I received training years ago in high school when they had shops. I also have copies of Oliver’s training Manuel’s written for teaching table saw safety in boys votech programs. Today I see young folks using table saws with no training both...

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

I have both. The sand blaster is a mess and can get expensive. I tried reclaiming abrasive but it’s not easy and you have to blast outside. My cabinet is a harbor freight which is a Chinese pile of junk. Like many I had to upgrade it just to make it work at a cost of close to 600 USD. If uou...

    Wadkin RU lathe restoration

Someone ate their spinach! That bade head casting looks heavy! The gears look straight forward for a lathe to turn ball point pens! Love in It!
