Nothing new. In the first example they using shell casting. 3D printing is cool but it gets better. One of the fibers you can use is for this. You print the part like you would normally do with PVA fiber but use this instead. Assemble your Tree. Then dip the tree into a premixed foundary slurry...

Hopefully this works. Here you see “moder” approaches. The pink slurry is used to improve surface finish. Also these guys used a resin binder in the sand. While it makes reclaim harder it provides for a more stout mold than regular green sand. Few sand pulls and fewer sand falls. I have used...

My first run in 1976 was to melt down pop cans for basic items using pettrobond sand. It was in my high school shop class. I learned a lot. Alloys like brass and some bronzes are a pain. Zinc which is used in some of these alloys will boil off at temperature. That creates two issues. It changes...

Now you have tipped my courtesy. The older green generals were known for fit and finish… it helped that family who owned general also owned the foundary that cast meehanite parts for US automakers. Hoffman in Germany makes the finest wood shapers sold new today. The family also owns a foundary...

Casting Iron is Casting Iron 1). Today we have furin resins and other refractory products. Industrial scale lost foam and lost wax has really evolved. To improve surface finish, the old timers used coal dust. Today we have a pink refractory spray. When doing something latgr And one off, I will...

OMG Funny you should say that. My last shop closed last week so I am job hunting. Turns out our HR lady got the sack. The conversation last week was were she had her tattoo. Apparrently she showed my boss and the super where it was. Little left for imagination!

I like the work of bill carter. Check out his YouTube channel. His shop is small and and basic. I bring him up because he sharpens plane blades like me. A. Single bevel with the corners slightly relieved. No curves. No back bevels. No micro bevels. It’s not that hard. Sharpen the damn thing and...

I think your right. And it becomes more irritating when some of these gods drop the hard sell in your lap at the end. I am willing to try a new idea. If it works great. If I don’t like it in favor of another approach well that is great to.

My comment was in regard to the arms race to make a better plane blade using powder metalurgy tool steels. In my own experiments I have found this to be a rat race. The unique set of requirements for a plane blade can be met with plain 01 which is quite workable in small shops without the need...

    So this Dovetailing business?...

This is a classic example of a Wadkin PK. What is your design opinion on this example?

I have seen the software for estimating cooling and it’s impressive but….. I have been casting metal since 1976 and have made my share of patterns and yes, I use shrink rules. But often I have to replacement parts for vintage machine tools and steam engines. The castings on the coffin nose...

Really!!!!!! Our government has decided acetone is to dangerous. So it’s a struggle for us. But due to labeling and license issues we can buy it as auto finish reducer yin 5 gal cans.

What would cause slow cooling in a sand mold? How would this influence the part?

    So this Dovetailing business?...

Years ago Jim Kingshot pointed out an updated record plane as ugly. A plastic handle on a 044 as I recall.it was awful compared to the older o44. I have always considered the Veritas planes well made but something just twisted my bloomers wrong. I couldn’t put a finger on it. Many of the newer...

    So this Dovetailing business?...

Wow! I see what your saying but never understood it. Thanks! Would you do us a favor and see if the Veritas planes have this issue? It would be curious if my issue with modern tool design could actually have an explanation.

The difference in use between 65 and 62 is insignificant and the edge retention is the same. But O1 is readily available and straight forward to heat treat. So I see no benefit to going beyond O1.

When is enough enough? It seems like we are all in this perpetual rat race to improve the past because we perceive a problem that isn’t necessarily there. The guys building and shooting flintlocks seek historical accuracy. Clearly there are better more reliable guns to chase deer with but that’s...

That is exactly the conclusion I came to years ago. My sorby chisels are fantastic but I was amazed at long it took me to prep and sharpen them. My LN chisels go much faster. But the sorby chisels perform a tad better than the LN chisels and hold the edge a bit longer. The LN are A2 and cryro...

There is no doubt about the contribution made by Carl Holtey. He influenced my work years ago. For me, this type of work of combining wood and metal was what inspired me. Whether it’s a plane or a gun or whatever. The reality of having to make a living pushed into commercial fitment and my...
