    what a mistaka to maka

I made some garden furniture out of mine, but I doubt you've got enough for that. The orangeness goes to a dark reddy-brown with time if you oil it. Outside and unfinished it will weather to a grey, like teak. It can be used in place of teak. Birdbox or bird table maybe? Pete

What type of tree / wood is this ?

When they chopped it down, did they leave any leaves behind on the ground? Probably easier to identify from them. Pete

    Watch out

Ah yes. Internet security. Thank-you for providing an unknown link to an unknown source for me to click on so I can find out more. Pete

    Your first timber yard visit

I too have found this to work well. I once went to a large commercial mill and fessed up straight away. The sales rep said they were delighted to deal with individual cabinet makers as they often had a much better idea of what they wanted than the commercial buyers they usually dealt with, which...

Why are clamps so expensive now?

I bought some cheap sash cramps 15 years ago and have regretted it ever since. They're horrible to use. You get what you pay for; if the market price is too much for you, make your own. As you say, they're not hi-tech. If you think cramps are expensive, look at the price of a decent chisel these...

    Bobby's new build thread

She means on the inside. We have those too and they can prevent embarrassing encounters. Pete

    Bobby's new build thread

That's a shame. After all the time, planning and money you've put into the build I would have thought you'd have one inside. Have you tried one? We have 4 and I can thoroughly recommend them. Pete

    Gouges

Aw hell! I'd hoped they'd be sufficiently obscure as to not invite too much ridicule. Thankfully, I don't look like the dudes in the picture, but as I pretty much resemble Mark Morton (but older and without the facial hair) I'm probably going to look pretty ridiculous anyway, now I come to...

    Gouges

For starters I'm having a go at a strumstick. Homemade ones are usually built like a flat top guitar, but I was in Hobgoblin yesterday and saw a S/H McNally instrument which had a soundbox carved from solid and thought it might be interesting to have a go at doing it that way. I have also seen...

    Gouges

I usually regard myself as adequately equipped and skilled when working in wood, but I need to hollow out a soundbox for a musical instrument and don't know where to start. If you imagine a small honeydew melon cut in half lengthwise and hollowed out to leave a bowl with walls 5-10mm thick, that...

Radio 4: The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees

There you go again. Another spot-on observation. The One Tree project (and there have been others) was documented by an illustrative book with many photographs. I borrowed it from a library at the time, I've only seen it once, and it left an indelible impression. The Man Who Made Things Out of...

Radio 4: The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees

Sorry folks. I didn't mean to diminish Rob Penn's work in any way, or to imply criticism. I was actually responding to the Radio 4 broadcast, which I heard this morning, and my first reaction to that was sadness that the One Tree project had not been documented in the same way that Mr Penn has...

Radio 4: The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees

Sadly, not an original idea, and if I remember the One Tree project right, they managed to find more uses for the timber. http://www.onetree.org.uk/ Pete

    Solar powered pond pumps

My parents installed a solar-powered water feature a while back. Great idea in principle, but not so good in practice. At moderate light levels it performed well and produced a pleasing fountain effect. However, whenever the sun came out the power picked up and the pump went into overdrive...

    New laptop advice sort

http://www.novatech.co.uk/ do 17" laptops with a choice of Windows 7 or Windows 10 installed. They also have a "no bloatware" guarantee; the laptop comes loaded with the operating system and nothing else. I have 4 of their machines and they are excellent. Customer service is exemplary too. Pete

    New twist on nuisance calls?

I never worry about calls I don't pick up. If it's important, they'll ring again; if they don't ring again, then it wasn't important. Pete

    Perspex glue

Says in the first paragraph that it's for bonding acrylic sheet. Then it says "Tensol 12 must not be used with Perspex ME, SW or AG grades and is not suitable for laminating sheets" so if you steer clear of those grades and don't laminate sheets you will be fine. I used it for years in the...

    Perspex glue

+1 for Tensol, your local acrylic plastic stockist should have some, or find small quantities on ebay. Long time since I used it, but chloroform was OK for sticking face to face, not good for edge-glueing. Tensol will have gap-filling properties too; to use, it's very like plastic cement (think...

    MotoGP

I remember a race a few years ago when Shinya Nakano had a rear tyre blow out at the end of the straight at Mugello, essentially catapulting him over the handlebars. The bike was estimated to be doing 212mph at the time and the rider was still travelling at 197 when his helmet hit the tarmac. He...
