    Engraving advice needed

Hypothetical at the moment, although they will get made eventually as I've got the parts. Time to join the local makerspace; they've got some lasers! Pete

    Engraving advice needed

I did consider that, but wanted an option to do graphics as well as lettering, and I'm really not up to engraving by hand. Pete

    Engraving advice needed

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply (again). I'm familiar with many of the ways to produce panels for modular synths, it's engraving I know nothing about. I have had swift and gratifying success with laminated paper in the past, but was looking for something a little different. I'm into...

    Engraving advice needed

Thanks julianf, that's the advice I was looking for. More trouble for me than it's worth I think. I've seen your work before on (I think) Muff's. Impressive stuff! Keep it up. Pete

    Engraving advice needed

Can anyone point me in the direction of some advice or a primer on cnc router/laser engraving? I am building some DIY oscillators and synthesizer modules and would like to be able to engrave lettering and graphics on aluminium face panels. I know less than Jack about this, but with the...

Bandsaw blade ‘fore / aft’ pulse

From the video clip you linked to it appears that the blade is running completely free of any guides. If it's not being guided it'll be all over the place. Try adjusting the tracking of the blade so it moves back and runs consistently against the rear guides. It wouldn't hurt to set up the side...

Newbie Question...Has Anyone Got An Opinion on This Lathe

Yes, generic Chinese mini-lathe as the others have said. Buy from a UK supplier, Arceurotrade and Warco have good track records when it comes to customer service. I have a mini mill from Arc and it's great. I bought a mini-lathe from Warco about 10 years ago. It was fine, but full of casting...

Free Hand Saws - should I restore them?

Yes... but, sadly, this most resembles my tenon saw. Pete

Hurrah! Someone else with my saw sharpening skills :D Pete

    Planer cutting issues

Check the infeed/outfeed rollers. I had one of these; the roller coverings (rubber?) wore significantly over time and caused all sorts of similar misbehaviour. I've no idea if you can get replacements, but a call to Metabo might point you in the right direction. Pete

    Lathe suggestions for new hobby?

On the whole it is true that you can turn wood on a metal lathe, but not metal on a wood lathe. I have successfully turned small wooden boxes on metal lathes. However, they are not designed for woodturning and have one or two restrictions that you will need to get around. It's easily do-able...

    Mens Sheds

Men's sheds are for retired blokes. That's what they were set up for, and I expect their facilities and activities will reflect the interests of their members/users. Practical younger (and non-male) people have broader and different interests and there is a growing number of community workshops...

Custard, Sir, you are a gentleman. You will have a PM shortly. Many thanks. Pete

    Any alternative to Maplins

You could try https://www.rapidonline.com/ . They have a far larger range than Maplin ever had. Cheaper too. They are quick to respond and their website is easier to navigate than some other electronics suppliers. Pete

    Help resawing timber for instruments

I want to make a symphonie... ...but I have no way of resawing my sycamore/maple/walnut to boards 6-10mm thick by 200mm wide. Is there anyone out there who could do this for me, or allow me access to their (large) bandsaw to do it myself? I am happy to pay a commercial rate, but you will have...

    TT Races Ian Hutchinsons crash

That screen shot shows the view from Dave Johnson's bike as he followed Hutchy and hit the resulting debris. If you watch it all the way through that bike keeps going and doesn't crash. Pete

The 'Janet and John' school of website design

It's not so much research as guiding principles of typography. I have forgotten most of what I used to know about it, but yes, there are optimum word and character counts per line to enhance the legibility of text for the reader. I used to bang on about this sort of thing on websites years ago...

John McGuinness' TT insane onboard camera

Well! I personally have nothing against public displays of affection, but perhaps you'd like to take this to private messages  Pete

    Horizontal, slatted tool-wall. A puzzle...

I made one like this. (Not my photo). Used 1/2" ply for the slats, routed a 1/2" slot to the rear underside of the holders so they hook over. Works very well; I'm very pleased with it. Mind you, if you fit it over a bench, you'll curse yourself when you drop a heavy steel tool onto that...
