    New 1/2in Router

Smart advice and I’m considering that but just wanted to put out the feelers for other brands. I’m not a brand junkie though I own plenty of Makita 😉

    New 1/2in Router

Any advice/recommendations buying a 1/2 Router. My old Elu died a death last week after years of service and I’m not up to speed on the Dewalt, Makita and Bosch routers etc so any one who has used any 1/2in models for a length of time chip in with your experiences and recommendations. Cheers.

    another of Jacob's rants.

“Councils and Common sense” that’s an oxymoron if ever I saw one !

Gluing end grain is stronger than you think.

I agree. If the joint fails on the glue line without any failure in the wood then it shows only that the wood is stronger in that grain direction, but practical speaking the glue joint is weaker because it failed as Setch rightly points out.

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

Jacob are you being deliberately obtuse or is that just the way you are ? What is it that he didn’t compare Jacob ? I think in your haste to have yourself heard you either don’t read the posts or misunderstand what’s actually being said. If you go back to my original thread post you will see...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

Again Jacob you miss the point entirely . If you’re saying that a tool is superior or better based on your use of it over an above an other of the same tool on the market then surely you need to have used them both to come to that conclusion and recommend ? I can say that I feel the 071 is a...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

But that’s the point Gary, (at least my point) they aren’t always giving just an opinion but throwing around dogmatism as if that’s the end of it. Unwary prospective woodies latch unto this sort of talk and go out of their way to perpetuate the dogmatism. Sure, we can all choose to ignore or...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

Jacob I don’t think I’d ever be classed as a follower of fashion be it tools or clothes 😄 I didn’t say that his claim that the Stanley is superior to a Lie Nielsen is extreme. That comment was meant that in general that’s what he does…make extreme claims of either uniqueness or about one tool...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

He is pushing an ideology DW and you’re right Jacob he is his own man. But it’s clear that being his own man he makes extreme claims that have no foundation in fact. Like some other have said, he is a knowledgable and skilful man no doubt and I too, like I mentioned before respect him for that...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

Recent post on Paul Seller’s blog in answer to a question by a subscriber. The reply to the question results in Paul talking about the ”superiority” of his old Planes over the newer. As he has been using his old Stanley planes over the 50 odd years of his career this somehow qualifies them ( he...

    Bosch 18v driver charging problem

I’d go along with DaveP here. I‘ve had similar issues in the past with brushed drills, dead then alive, dead and then…change of brushes and then alive.

    Olympics

Johnson, as always, was excellent with sound analysis and common sense. Maybe he was more grumpy this time around because of the incessant focus on Team GB members finishing 5th or 6th or whatever and totally ignoring the winner of the races. The other presenters, especially during the...

    Preserving log cabin

I’d second Ollie about not using a film finish. What I’ve down with my own now for the last 7 years is a couple of coats of a solvent based preservative , in my case Barrettine, and then after it’s dried a couple of coats of Decking Oil. Don’t be conned into buying a so called “specialist cabin...

Repairing solid wood Shaker kitchen doors

Yep, I’d second that 😀 I’ve seen similar happen before. You can just see in one of the pics that the side of the mortice is slightly broken which might indicate that it was tight enough (properly) in the first place and expansion of the panel has forced it apart. The poster also says that he...

    Makita lxt

Depends what your going to use it for and how often. I have the 481 and it is beast. It’s heavy but will plough through most materials without issue. The DHP484 will do most jobs in the workshop but it’s Chuck is plastic if remember correctly. It’s about £100 cheaper in kit form. I’m not...

Wood filler. Hot cold, whatever works

John. Depends on what timber your using, but I would say that it drys to a light Sandy colour. Also depends on what finish your using . Anything other than a paint finish and it’s going to show if the stain doesn’t match the timber or the colour of the filler. Ive never used it other than on...

Wood filler. Hot cold, whatever works

I’d second the Toupret. Easy to use/mix and very easy to sand even by hand. I take no notice of the drying time on the box as it takes a little longer to dry than some. One of the best I’ve used if you’re not in a hurry.

Are these cheap jigs good enough for a one off?

Depends on how many holes you intend to bore. I’ve used what looks like the same jig to do 24 hinges in 18mm Birch ply with little loss of cut quality. If your into using them regularly then may be better to buy a decent bit but otherwise you’ll be fine with this as a one off IMHO.

    Tips for re painting walls.

With all respect to Roy or anyone else, I wouldn’t use Zinsser BIN, as its shellac based and not meant as a primer for big walls coverage and will stink your home out for a while. From your photo it look as if the top coat is fairly stable on the wall and the patches are just a case of over...
