    Plane fettling

Thanks Paul Never had to do it so never considered it . Just all seems bit excessive to me and I wonder what was done to the sole previously. I’ve never had a plane from any manufacturer- Record, Stanley, Veritas or Quangsheng that needed so much work.

    Plane fettling

I’m not quite sure how you can remove material from elsewhere and not touch the perimeter Tom without there being some convexity in the sole in the first place. Even if there was some convexity, it would have to removed to be on a plane with perimeter. If you ran the sole on a very narrow...

    Very Fine Paint Brush

Mike I’ve never used the paint you mention so don’t know about how it drys etc but I imagine it flows and levels quite well. I’d be avoiding Wooster or Purdy for that type of job. I’ve used them both in many variations over the years and always think they are overrated but ok for general...

    "FACT!"

Fact ? Nah ! I know for fact that my Airedale faces North North East which is why he goes around in circles until he can find his bearings. Watching those circles I notice that they follow a pattern that mimics the movement of the Earth magnetic fields and the gravitational pull of the Moon ...

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Tom I don’t think you come across as “a know it all”, you’re just voicing an opinion like the rest of us, it’s more the terms that are used rather than what your trying to get across. If we use the term “cap iron influence“ rather than “influenced shavings” we are not talking about the shavings...

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Tom “Perhaps Pabs could give more information of his intentions with the plane, or his options..” I think the answer here is pretty clear …he wants to plane timber. The problem with all this stuff is that most of it is frankly nonsense and useless to boot. Terms like “influence” as applied to...

    Please teach me about planes

David, seriously ? Like I mentioned before you’re obviously a very knowledgeable guy and have good things to say and pass on, but all this nonsense that amounts to no one before you came along had any idea how to plane correctly , or none of us, before you enlightened us, knew how to use a cap...

Who was the customer for a plane like this in old England?

David and Phil There was huge dose of irony in my post which I guess is hard to catch unless your the writer. I‘m not ignorant of Jacob‘s DW bashing but it does work both ways of course. David I don’t have any problem understanding your posts at all . But they do sometimes say in 3000 words...

Who was the customer for a plane like this in old England?

Quite right Jacob. Why people continue to perpetuate the idea of a “rounded bevel” with the freehand method that you and others advocate I’ll never know. The bevel is never “rounded”; sure it might be slightly convex, but that just follows by the natural movement of arms and hands along the...

    What Knotting Solution to use.

Niall As Jacob says, the paint may be the problem if it’s just coming away from the knotting solution but not if the knots are bleeding through well adhered paint. I‘ve found most knotting products pretty poor when used with modern paints. I started using a couple of thin coats of Titebond 3...
