Cleaning the gunk off new machines

I have bought a new pillar drill. The table and base are ground cast iron and covered in grease/gunk to protect them. I need to clean that off before putting something like Liberon lubricating wax on. What is the best way to clean it off? Thanks in advance Mark

    Good tool shop in Woking

Hi Surrey in general is devoid of any decent tool shops or timber suppliers in my opinion, certainly outside the M25 anyway. (I don't really include SL hardwoods as being Surrey) This website caught my eye some time ago. They are based in Woking but its not clear if you can walk in or its web...

    Abrasive to flatten plane soles

Obviously wet and dry is commonly used but I cant find it in anything other than standard sheet size. I'm looking for something on a roll for use on longer planes. Has anyone used this stuff from workshop heaven, says it can be used on metal. Does it need lubricating, is water OK? I think...

    Cross-cutting 8" x 8" oak

I've got loads of 8 inch square oak uprights in the garden (my neighbour calls it wood henge) all cut to length when green. We went round each side with a handheld circular saw which left about an inch and a half square in the middle, which was cut with a hand saw. Simples Mark[/list]

    Woodpecker or Jessum

When I looked it said the normal package price will be £407, therefore the axminster should be by far the cheapest (taking into account the discount they will still be giving for buying a package.). Mark

Major oak cladding disaster - need to remove lost head nails

Sounds like part of your problem is the way it was nailed. It should be nailed at the bottom of the board only. BUT high enough up so it doesn't go through the top of the board underneith. The top of the board underneith will be held by the board above clamping down on it. This holds each...

    New Pillar Drill

Thanks for all the replies, they really do help. Ray, I fully intend to build a new table for the drill, something along the lines of Steve Maskery's design in a recent British Woodworking (although simplified) I think the range of travel etc will be fine for me at the moment. I like the fact...

    New Pillar Drill

Thanks for that I don't have a problem with the price, I just don't want to but a pony In terms of it's build it seems to be a bit "beefier" than similar sized tools which drew me to it I think the downsides of pillar drills are quill play and power, just want to satisfy myself these are OK with...

    New Pillar Drill

Hi I am looking for a bench top drill. I know many would advokate a second hand fobco/meddings/startrite etc. However having had a couple of bad buys on ebay and being no engineer I have decided to buy new. I am pondering the following http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Draper-63221- ... 286.c0.m14...

    Secret plane maker

Apart from him coming across as an *****, who would pay that price for a new plane if you didn't know a few basic facts like the maker? Philly I think you should list one of your coffin smoothers, without your initials, and a big starting price, you might be missing a trick here  :D

    Seized lever cap screw

Thanks for that I can get to Camberley Before I try that I would like to make sure the screw is the correct one for the frog.
