    Life expectancy of Domino cutters

The first 5mm cutter that came with the machine gave up the ghost after cutting about 50 holes in a mixture of kiln dried oak and ply. Basically the cutter head sheared off where it is attached to the shaft. Aximinster, after an initial wobble, were good enough to replace it despite being a...

Where to get planer knives sharpened

Thanks Pete, I know where to get "official" new blades. I was more interested in getting the old uns sharpened, and on my other thread in the buying forum, where to buy new none branded ones, as i think the dewalt ones are rather expensive. As said before though, I will have a look at this...

Where to get planer knives sharpened

Waka I need to get the Dw733 thicknesser blades sharpened and will need the jet60A done in the near future. Not got a lot of time now but will look at the disposable system in the next few days hopefully - an interesting idea I hadn't heard of. Any other postal recommendations for bog...

    Where to buy planer knives

I would like a second set of knives for my DW733 thicknesser. Has anyone bought any none branded ones from the likes of cutting solutions? Any recommendations as the "official" ones seem rather expensive? Does anyone know the dimensions of the knives in the DW733 or will a supplier just need...

    Filling knots prior to finishing

As per my other thread on this forum, I have some oak shelves i will be finishing with a shellac sanding sealer and then clear wax. A couple of the planks have some knots with fairly large cracks in them. Now i'm not at all bothered by how this looks, as they will be fairly well hidden when in...

Northumberland is like a war zone today

The roundabout will have been closed until the search teams found every shotgun pellet they could. Try doing that quickly. The police in the UK ARE trained to shoot in the head, in the event of a suicide bomber, or circumstances such as armed hostage takers with their victims next to them...

    Keeping my DW733 thicknesser running

Peter, I would be surprised if the knives need sharpening considering how much cutting they have done, and the finish I am still getting I have tried to understand why this would stop the wood feeding, but can't really fathom it out, prehaps you wouldn't mind explaining. Also how often would...

    Keeping my DW733 thicknesser running

Thanks OLD, will do the beds. The rollers are smooth rubber in feed and out feed. When touched they have a light layer od sawdust on them, so they are not as "sticky" as I think they should be. Remember a post about wiping them with some thing like meths/white spirit/lighter fluid, something...

    Keeping my DW733 thicknesser running

Hi After thicknessing a fair bit of oak, the wood is now not feeding though properly and keeps stopping. I think first is to clean the rollers. What with? Also as it has steel beds what should I lubricate them with? Will liberon lubricatingwax be OK? Mark

Advice requested; black stain on work-top

Had it happen several times on mine, usually visitors. Its quite easy to sand out with a elecy sander, the stain hardly penetrates the walnut. Then several coats of oil, good as new. That said I'm with Paul, I'd like them to leave the damage and I'll sort it. Mark

Need help matching a finish to a shop bought item

Thanks for the reply. Couple of Q's in response Can I use anything other than than meths to check the colour as I've not got any? White spirit? Water? What is a mop? I have found some Shellac sanding sealer in the shed, no idea why I have it as I've never used it. It's obviously been there...

Need help matching a finish to a shop bought item

Ok cards on the table to start with, I know nothing about finishing other than ragging on some oil or painting stuff, so please help. A couple of years ago we bought an oak filing cabinet and matching set of drawers (long before I had the space, tools, confidence to build my own). This is the...

At last, a hardwood timber merchant in Surrey

I have long thought Surrey was devoid of a decent timber merchant. (SL hardwoods is London as far as I'm concerned and Wests in Sussex is too far to be convienient) Today I noticed an ad for Surrey Timbers Ltd in the back of this months Brit Woodworking. They are nice and central, just north...
