Pillar drill buying advice- not a vague query this time!

I recently changed my bench pillar drill and ended up choosing one because it was local (a Startrite Mercury). I think it is sound advice to get in front of it and check, particularly quill bearings (no / minimal play). I also came to suspect that the tables with the most big holes in belonged...

macmillan charity workshop open day 2015

Huge thanks to Richard and Kate for organising this, no small undertaking at all. Well done Ollie for adding the barbie too. As before a great crowd and the time flies by. If you thought of maybe going but didn't here are my own 10 reasons why the 320 mile trip was worth every mile (in random...

    font ideas?

There are so many fonts around it's bedazzling - but I would probably find the actual letter I liked and then tune it. As you say you may prefer a specific letter in a certain font. Apart from upper case there are also 'headline' fonts which were designed for just that and tend to work bigger...

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

Thanks KevM, have ordered a Rabone from Amazon, give it a try. The old ones you have are the Proper Rabones I think. Agreed Lurker, no logic at all. I think of them as 6" rules (generic for the thing)... goes back years I suppose.

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

Found the 42 quidder... RS, so it has a radio (wireless) built in? Yes, I suspect I have the thin flexi M&W. I shall investigate. I don't know about the current Rabones as they are credited Rabone/Stanley, which makes me suspicious. I might call Matthew at WH, the M&W is pretty good if it was a...

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

So that's where I left it. Knew it would turn up somewhere  I'd tried Dictum but wasn't sure about the Starrett, may have missed that they do a metric only. Hadn't thought to check Dieter Schmidt, and RS got overlooked too. I can see one at 23 euros but where does the 42 quid come from...

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

I've lost it, my favourite. It was an old Rabone, nice thick steel and metric one side. I have a Moore & Wright - too thin and flimsy. I have a Fischer - too narrow, too thin, and flimsy I have a 100mm out of a Christmas cracker - best of the three by far. Does anyone know of the existence of a...

    kinks in handsaws?

Thanks Billy, you make it sound easy. I'll assume I need to remove the handle - the screws have never been disturbed and are nicely settled, but I can give it a go. Once plate is out I may do all the setting etc then too. It'll be a good saw to try this on as it has great potential but not much...

    kinks in handsaws?

A few ideas here. I'm reluctant to remove plate from back (just yet anyway) as I have never done that and not sure I could get it back nice and tight. I'll start with the simpler options, Sheffield's sounds logical too and simple to try. If I can improve it just a bit it will need a sharpen and...

    kinks in handsaws?

Thanks Bod, I follow (I think :D ). Feels logical as in use over years the edge is in compression when cutting... or maybe just badly used or stored. Anyway it isn't too badly kinked so well worth a tune. Needs sharpen & set etc, handle nice and tight. I shall give it a go.

    kinks in handsaws?

Every so often I buy a few cheap handsaws. One recent arrival is this one, but it has slight kinks in it. I have taken best pic I can manage, they are slight: Question is, is there a reliable technique to remove the kinks? Here's the saw, nothing too special steel back... just a nice size and...

    Sparks No70 at work

Thanks all. I have realised before that we all notice the details, the extra effort etc, FAR more than clients normally do. Demanding we may be, but at least we take note and care... (moan over).

    Sparks No70 at work

Just needed to share this. An oak top with the inevitable reversals therein, plus the solid block endgrain motif in the centre. Had the No 70 set for a fair cut too, a decent bite. That plane is really very good =D>

    American board sizing

I'd like to think Chrispy's is founded in fact, otherwise it all seems a bit of contrary-ness (like there's no 'I' in aluminium, and a router is a sort-of sat-nav) :D

    American board sizing

so Skills is right then, it's just quarters. I had assumed it said something about width, i.e. both dimensions. Got it now, but does 8/4 tell me something 2" doesn't?

    American board sizing

Just so I know... can someone explain the way US workers talk about (for example) : "I made test cuts in a 8/4 air-dried walnut board" for example. What do these fractional-looking board sizes mean?

Wadkin Time Warp Workshop - Kent

That restored one above that Jack shows crops up on Pinterest, credited Shane Whitlock...? Is it alive and kicking? It's a real beauty but I think the guards are a bit too pretty.

    small recessed panel advice

I never managed to explain this very well - what I wanted was even clearance all round but it's hard to explain, should have sketched it. Anyway, sorted - I have an old trim router with custom guide bush (made on lathe from brass tube) and a 6mm cutter set to depth. The template is corian - it...

Request for advice on timber prep for moulding planes.

Just wondering Bern, how's that beech doing? Thought it might be getting quite close by now. I have a bit of beech now also, but doubt I have the patence to make a plane, let alone a set!
