Ebay find - mysterious table saw-

Well done. I had a look. Very rare indeed to find a heavy cast 8" saw. Seems it's been repainted, and table does the moving - rise/fall and tilt. And it hasn't tilted since paint I think? Assuming it runs smooth (bearings etc) it could be a real cracker I think. And there is almost certainly a...

    Record 0 vice jaws

Thanks all, I will try Irwin, hadn't considered going to the source!! And BB, agree there might be times the milled face is a bad thing - what I could do is get the stock ones, and make some in brass for the delicate stuff. Add that to the list then!

    fan heater recommend

Just got one of these and very pleased with it. About 3 times the price of the cheap plastic ones at £25 - but metal casing, dead basic, really well built, quiet and amazingly compact. No frills at all - 2kW, 2 switches (so 1 or 2 kW), no thermostat (eBay copy implies there is but it's a safety...

    Record 0 vice jaws

Please does anyone know if new jaws are available anywhere. Mine are in a bad way - I know I could face them or make some but shiny new ones with the milled faces would be nice, and way quicker! It's like this (this one isn't mine): edit i did find someone on eBay doing sizes 1 upward, but...

    Startrite 352 - an overview

Been a while, I am still as big a fan of the 352 as ever. I may hunt out Pete M's info about the rollers... I may give it a go as he sells it so well: "its only a fiver and half and hours time to try them out". If you're watching Pete, remind us where it is please. edit - it's the page before...

    filing ideas

The heights vary, but where tables end up on the bandsaw and p-drill are about ideal for me. The one with the little cheap chop-saw on is certainly low - that one was just 'I have it so use it'. Also struck me, 2 of those (matching) and a door would make a very capable assembly table / light...

    filing ideas

Not filing, that would be under metalworking. Filing. One of my 2 favourite workshop storage tricks. The other is a French cleat all the way round the workshop walls. These office/commercial units are cheap and plentiful - and the office ones are normally quite solid. Some smaller machines are...

    rasps wanted

I think you are needing hand-stitched rasps. May I recommend Liogier. Huge range of forms, profiles and grains. The other better-known is Auriou but I feel Noel Liogier's are better value, absolutely as good - his Sapphir are arguably better. And he's a really nice bloke...

    Which Tablesaw - HELP

I think this issue polarises - but there is no way I would buy a new Tsaw in that price range. Either save quite a lot and look seconhand, or spend that budget and get something far better. The only new machine I run is a Festool Kapex, the least used and over-priced IMO, I have 2 bandsaws, a...

    Silverline head clamps

I got a pair of the Record ones years ago - never use them. To get the beam stiffness you need (given these things really become useful for long clamp lengths - shorter lengths they are just too much faff). The holes you make weaken the beam further. They are clunky, a bit crude and will not...

    Workbench Lighting

I'd be interested to hear what you go with. From my own experience (mistakes) I reckon workshop lighting is often overlooked or its importance underestimated. I agree natural would be best (diffused north ideally) but in our climate it is dingy for half the year and then dark at 4pm! I find high...

How do I joint very large, very long beams?

The lap and plates or similar alternatives will surely do it, but foir pleasure and entertainment take a look at how the Japanese do it - there are several examples on youtube - fine work indeed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9Wh2cgDL6E

    Country File

yes, saw that bit almost by accident. Really good work and very resourceful. Then wifey turned over to Strickly... I'm no celebrity, but get me out of here.

    spindle mounting question

Many thanks all - I'll start with turning a cup to fit over existing centre. The Axi set looks excellent but I'll try the budget approach first. Excellent service as usual :)

    spindle mounting question

Good day turners! Advice please: when I turn T-bars for vices I get to a point where I need to mount one finished end in tailstock in order to match the other end. It's made with one end separate - 10mm hole in end and matching spigot on shaft. But to have that joint invisible I would then...

    The Hemingway workbench

Pleased you get into the spirit of this bench Cheshire! - i reckon it would be just as good in pre-prepped softwoods, an easy build. Agreed re shelf - 'tis planned... and that will be softwood. Also 2 cantilever sticks screwed to underside of top to support a long tray at the back, that's where...

    The Hemingway workbench

Indeed Eric, I have known tea be used so why not. Anyway it seems fine now - i think the oils overcame the coffee. Re slippy BB - not very. I reckon I want a lazy finish - fast and easy but tough in use. I've tried all sorts and not sure there is one best one. I have the Chestnut on the big ash...

    Excellent scribing compass £2

Very useful things, nice & simple too. I agree the plastic ones are rubbish, love that old Helix above. I did spot this ages ago somewhere - about as close to art as you could get with a compass :)

    The Hemingway workbench

Hi Mark - we are planning a house move early next year and whilst I expect to have good outside space I may well have to make do with compromise workspace for a while until a decent shop is 'acquired'. Also I do think a bench I can take apart and hence move would be handy. The other reason is a...
