    Disston saw restoration

I got this cheap a few months ago, and whilst in overall good condition, the teeth clearly needed re-profiling and a good sharpen. I did a light clean and re-finish to handle, cleaned up the screws - but then almost by accident discovered that Richard T is a bit of a dab hand in the sharpening...

    Marples/Stanley Chisel Challenge

yes Jacob, I know it may look a little odd, not that odd for a parer* surely. But thing is it works very well - overall it's about 14" long. I'm not sure the 'original' handle was original anyway, but it was oak (and split). *Was this a parer anyway - it's like a thinnish b/e all-rounder, but...

    Marples/Stanley Chisel Challenge

A quick addition - an old U.S. Stanley socket chisel, which lost it's original handle a few years ago anyway (badly damaged when I got it). A new African blackwood one. I use this a lot as a parer and so the handle is quite long. One of my favourite and most-used chisels.

    Scheppach TS2500 set-up issue

Sorted now... sorry! I was looking in totally the wrong place. Turns out the main culprit was the detachable fence has vertical play in it's track (quite a lot) and I had carelessly shifted it along a bit. A combination of re-levelling the fence in its track, and re-levelling the sliding table...

Record 043 - Great plough indeed!

Yes Alf - that's what I have on my Stan 45, and Record 44 - doesn't look period but works v well.

Record 043 - Great plough indeed!

I knew the second I saw it that 43 was going to be a problem. I now have about 5 on ebay watch. And Jim, that rosewood is off my old U.S. Stan 45 so it's good enough I reckon  And I think you (of all people) very nearly tipped this into a sharpening thread back there. Yes, Scouse, come on...

    Scheppach TS2500 set-up issue

Don't know if anyone has come across this or knows how to sort it. On the sliding carriage fence I have the micro-adjust stop and I have previously spent time adjusting level of carriage to table, and all square fence to blade, but the flip-stop on the micro-adjust isn't square vertically. It's...

    planer knife setting jig

Yes Jon - I think we end up splitting a hair or so! Having replaced the blades on my Scheppach 260 yesterday, I find it more frustrating that the act of final closing the lock nuts (even when they are backed off just a touch, 20 degree turn say) moves the blade up a frustrating and unpredictable...

    Bench Tops

I think Paul is your man for this one! Agree pretty much everything. I'd go one layer mdf on top, clamped the way Paul says (so you need some G-clamps, but you'll need those anyway). I don't believe in sacrificial tops either... it's the workpiece you 'shape', not the top. One thing - holdfasts...

Rutlands.... I'd avoid them at all costs.

Having previously criticised Rutlands here (mainly for some Dakota items I felt were overpriced), I too ordered and waited about 2 months recently. In my case the 66pc set of 1/2" router cutters. But they were 40% off I recall - I know they cost me £125-ish for 66, free shipping. So there is a...

    Bench Hold Downs

I too am a massive fan of the traditional holdfast - as hand-forged by Richard here, and his pricing is simply Victorian  But the Veritas will be very good quality, but way slower to use and I'm quite sure will not apply as much pressure. One thing about those holdfasts is how quick they...

    A 'leftovers' bench

Indeed Skills - but the whole idea was leftovers, and I still get to use the burnisher anyway. Needs a new handle so I'll get on the lathe soon... stand very well back y'all. (Thanks Jim, I like it but it's encouraging when others do too.)

    planer knife setting jig

Hi Jon - that's about 2 thou then, I think. Sums good but an allowance for feed rate needs to go in. This theory is right if the following cut enters where the previous left... quite some feed rate I would say. I'm sticking with true to the outfeed - as I have said it has worked for me for...

    Ashley Isles split ferrules

Are these commercial ferrules a bit thin anyway? I wonder as I need to buy some and have investigated Sorby and Ashley Isles. Any advice on where to get nice thick ones??

    planer knife setting jig

O.K., may try it next time but what I do works anyway, for me. I just had to replace the blades this morning (what a pain anyway) so I'll leave it for now! Small point (on the Scheppach 260ci) - there are 5 lock nuts, and however you try, when final tightening any one of them it raises the blade...

    hornbeam anywhere please?

Excellent response many thanks - Andrew I will email you but as a back-up would maybe try Cambridge and Mac. I fancy having a few small pieces in stock - if it's as good for handles at it seems. By the way I notice on the Lie site they say it's commonly called ironwood over in Maine.

    hornbeam anywhere please?

I'm interested in making a chisel handle in hornbeam (just wrecked a beech one on my 2" U.S. Stanley, though I suspect the beech wasn't all that good). What has impressed me over years now is the bland looking hornbeam on the Lie Nielsen chisels. I am amazed what a thrashing they will take...

    Workshop 'widows'

Yes Alf, on further consideration it could have back-fired. But it was actually my wife's idea, and she's boss

    Leg vices... musings

Certainly will Andy, well-researched as usual =D> I too like the 'keep a box of odds... everything becomes useful once every seven years'... It's true, as you will recall sending me the screw for my plough fence! I think this is very much the history of the leg vice... shop made incl wooden...
