    Dating a Stanley #4 1/2 plane?

Most of this is from memory... but I recall Stanley USA acquired Seargant in Sheffield around that time. I have a Seargant hand drill so had looked into the maker. I then saw somewhere (it makes sense) that the first Sheffield-made planes used parts from the States, and that later much tooling...

    Coronet start-up

Hi all, I have an old green Coronet lathe and it is excellent for the work I do. But I am a bit concerned that there is no soft-start and when on high speed setting (normal for me as I do spindle work mostly) the kick on start-up puts a big load on the drive train, especially the take-up pulley...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

Some small points if I may. I agree with Bugbear - there's close, but then there is a few thou close. Close was knowledge to be had if you looked, but Kato-close is different and seeing it helps believe it. I was accused of being harsh to Chris Schwarz and Tom LN - harshness was not the...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

I think Zed above is absolutely right, and the actual debate has been the attraction of this thread. Regarding the OP, I am fairly sure the answer is this: - where? between Connecticut and Maine - when? 90's - how? the collective work of Tom LN and Chris S, then editor of the most influential...

    Knifed Lines

Andy's idea above is good. Also check what light you work by. Diffused above is no good, point-source above but to one side will help. A cheap reading lamp may make quite a difference. And have no fear doing whatever works, it's hitting the lines that matters after all :)

    Design help

I think it would be a shame to make the upper frame in mdf, and technically poor (as a structure, visually, the need to hide it etc). This could be made nicely in thin laminated woods (like plywood but shaped round formers and bonded). Making it that way allows for wiring within, and the use of...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

I'm not sure where the knowledge got lost (or when) but it did and it is good that it is back. I too recall CS in Pop Wood around 2006 basically saying he sets it back, out of the way (implied). But to be fair to CS he didn't come back later and say he had invented or discovered anything. If...

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

Really pleased so far. Been restoring the primary on an old laminated 2 1/4" iron out of a woodie (an old Marples iron I recall) - fast, easy excellent. Grab one while you can I think.

    Wood vice

Forgive me but 'Moxon', after Joseph Moxon to whom it was wrongly attributed by Chris Schwarz years ago in Pop Wood...;)

    Wood vice

Not seen a Zyliss before, worth knowing about. Had forgotten about Andy's Parrot vice also. Spoiled for choice, and way under max budget :)

    Wood vice

Indeed BB - Paramo is worth seeking out I think (as an alternative)

    Wood vice

That's the idea. Designed really for metalworking but with wood jaws very good for what you need. Forget the new Irwins, check ebay for a Record no3 or 4 as Beartricks says. £30 - 50 as a guide and try and find locally as they are heavy! There are loads on there at the moment, just search Record...

    Wood vice

The screwfix one fits under the benchtop, check the user reviews. I can't think of a woodworking vice that surface mounts, but I know a few who use the excellent Record engineers vices, with wood jaws fitted.

    Cheaper Steb Centres Now?

Yep, all fine now - odd they have them on eBay but not visible in their own store anywhere. But they can be had, so all good - thanks for re-finding!

    Cheaper Steb Centres Now?

Damn - i should have bought the other day. I will call Chronos - i wanted a live so I can make a cone vcentre for another job (slip over the steb) and this gave me a useful alternative live, cheap.

    Cheaper Steb Centres Now?

Today I can't get that Chronos link to work (error 404) and my site searches (live centres etc) don't bring them up. I did look the other day and they were there, but could they possibly have disappeared?

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

3 minutes on an old Mawhood chisel that was in a fairly bad way: Exactly what I want these things for - very close to flat, close enough for me at this stage. Maybe worth noting if you happen to be new to diamond stones, they feel really coarse and sharp out of the box, and in moments they...

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

Got the 5 for £20 deal. Arrived really quick. I shall have to investigate the reverse side, but all 5 of mine are flat - straight-edge to light flat, that'll do me. Quality looks very promising. I use mine for putting new primaries on old planes, chisels etc and previously used the cheap 3 for a...

Ebay find - mysterious table saw-

H&S aside for a mo, I reckon you have yourself a cracker. Yes, fit a riving knife (effective, not the thing it has holding the hood up) - that's easy. Fill the belt cover - easy. Maybe try a zero-clearance insert, just optional. But it looks like real solid quality and full of promise - well...
