Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

Update time. I've managed the flutes on all 4 legs, and reasonably happy with the result. I appreciate there are many jigs and ways of doing these, but I wanted to do them using a scratch, partly because of the control I would get. It's slow but you can progress the cut til you are happy with...

Richard Kell No.2 honing guide help needed

A quick side-track. Sorry Derek, but I'll get back on thread. The MF spokeshave: The stone is set 14mm up, but after a couple of strokes check where you are and adjust stone height if necessary. I found the inner bevel needs to be 1.9mm wide (I mean just under 2) to give an approx 30 degree...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Never a foot wrong, Andy (or leg, whatever). So, yet more planes coming out including the 'home-made shoulder'. The very essence of that elusive British understatement. So you angled the mating faces of the seat... that's part of the foldy feature I cannot visualise, isn't it? Is this whole...

Will do Jacob. See, we do aim to please

Richard Kell No.2 honing guide help needed

All nice and well for a flat blade of course. Now then, about the Millers cylindrical shave eh?... I mean that one where the blade is a part cylinder. I might have a nifty (to me anyway) technique involving no jigs at all... Jacob will like that, surely?? Totally repeatable, single very narrow...

    Two Lawyers Saws

I understand Klaus (who makes the handles) is suffering seriously from an allergy caused by working wood. Initially it was Cocobolo but he is now affected by any wood. This appears to have halted any further production. I think this is a serious loss to us all - my own view is that they have...

You guys don't seem that excited...

Don't care about the ££... we signed up years ago (without a referendum, I recall) so whether it covers or not is too late to matter. Also too hard to measure I suspect as there will be intangibles for a while to come. I'm happy to really respect the GB medal winners and competitors though -...

You guys don't seem that excited...

Delighted to see the GB mens football out, on penalties too   After being given a serious run-around by Senegal, a just and pleasing result. Allows the attention to focus where it has been very justly earned. p.s. and Sheffield just copped another gold...

You guys don't seem that excited...

Yes Kirkpoore, excited: If Yorkshire was a country it would be 11th in the medal table. (source, Twitter... the fount of all knowledge). I gather the Scots have brought more than their fair share too. from a half-Scots Yorkshireman ;)

    Another Grand Day Out

I suspect lilac is about to go the way of the Maas, Corro-dip and the Record 043... if you have a tree in the garden it has just doubled in value

    Thin-kerf bandsaw blades

Hi Gerard - re sharpness / life it's too soon to tell, but the stock material is (I think) the same as the Tuffsaws fastcut and that lasts very well. I'm sure M42 would last longer (maybe a lot) but for the volumes I work I really prefer the precision and I think they are about a tenner each...

    Another Grand Day Out

I do hate to stray off-topic... but you and I know there is absolutely NOTHING clockwork about Alfie. I had always associated clockwork with a certain predictability

Holdfast Group Buy - May have found a UK Blacksmith

Hi Mick - re the popping in the fire... over to Richard. But on both these forms I still use scrap under and it is absolute normal practice to do that. Whilst the new tuning has a slightly flatter tip hence I guess a little more contact area I would never normally use it without scrap wood...

    Thin-kerf bandsaw blades

This may be of interest to any of us running mid-size machines (say 70 - 110" blades... the Incas, Kity 413 and 613, and most others with approx 10 - 12" wheels). I have a Kity 413 which I use as a smaller second machine and keep it mainly for precise ripping. Ian at Tuffsaws kindly got me a new...

Holdfast Group Buy - May have found a UK Blacksmith

Now then Mr T. The new 'evolution' holdfast you very kindly gave me to test: So that's one tap with the smallish LV mallet top right, a board of ash... and a grinder approx 5Kg on the end. The evolution bit is here, newer version at the top: I was always delighted with the originals, but...

    Another Grand Day Out

Did anyone notice Jim's swagger on that pic of mine above. Had it not been for the presence of the charming Emma in the shot, I would probably have done a Reservoir Dogs quip... seriously, check the posing of the 3 of them, very Tarantino.

    Another Grand Day Out

Brilliant day (remarkably calm journey Jim). Shame you couldn't make it Scouse but there will be more I expect. Here's a Gang of Four: (sorry, over-exposed, walking backwards etc) And here is one of Tim's planes... bit of a stunner. I gather even Mr Carter was impressed and he's none too easy...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Very nice dovetails indeed, and the mouldings looking great. It appears to be fairly close to finished? The most extensive display of hand-tool work (and patience) I've seen in years - brilliant!

Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

did find a bit of time today  The support device has turned into a contraption: The vee support doesn't stay central to the stock. Logical after having made it, as the lower vee face moves less than the upper (around the pin it is fixed to)... anyway, a curved support inset was made, and...

    wadkin PK restoration

That is looking very nice indeed, fine job. And given a Wadkin lasts for ever, worth the effort. One day the fence may get a face grind, but personally I'd bang an mdf face on for now.
