cherry for me too - Roger knows a bit of cherry when he sees it (The Woodworker June '12)

Major FleaBay Bargain! And a HUGE thanks to condeesteso

Cracking lathe Jim... one of your 'typical' finds, ridiculous price. No doubt the milling attachment will be along quite soon. Couple of things - we discussed a rebuild of your workshop. You would have to build around that lathe now, cos it is not moving. And happened to catch a repeat of Dynamo...

    Table saw blade width

Quite tricky this. Andy is handy (sorry) with hand saws but I would not like to get that cut 20mm deep and dead square, straight etc. A conventional scratch blade will not support itself that deep, but imagine a basic card/cabinet scraper on edge, fixed into a block and with a fence 12mm from...

Liberon Bison wax v Briwax - which is best?

I use the Bison clear regularly and rate it very highly. My general aim (personal taste) is as little finish i.e. build as possible. I am amazed how hard it ends up... no finger-marking at all. Can't speak for the Briwax version so I guess this is only half-useful

Double-Bevel Paring Chisel Sharpening On Waterstones

Paul - I like the look of that Trend jig... I may get one. It looks like a better version of the Axi 'deluxe' honing guide they do, and I have worn one of those out over the years (the brass roller wearing away on internal bearing surface). I'm not remotely interested in the for and against...

    Handrail wreath update

Agree Andy - we saw one in progress at Mac a few weeks ago. I was impressed by the few tools used also, and the innovative / intuitive selection of tools for each stage. That Axi Parrot vice looks a bit of a bargain also - wonder if it really locks up well? An affordable alternative to the...

    Hand Stitched Rasps

I'm pretty sure the makers wouldn't endorse this... but I've heard Corro-dip used to restore metal files. My guess would be it removes material at a molecular level and may therefore restore sharpness. But I have to say I wouldn't risk it on hand-stitched rasps. Re life expectancy, Noel's...

    Bandsaw mystery

Good idea there Richard, put your name on it as a deterrent to the fence collector. Unusual to find the fence 4 times bigger than the machine though... I think yours is safe. Just a thought - is the fence fixed to the machine, or the other way round?

    Bandsaw mystery

Where do all the fences go... does someone collect fences?? I watch ebay for used bandsaws (I only have 2, then there is always the upgrade option). I would guess as many as 80% of all used bandsaws on ebay are minus fence. I expect not to get the optional sliding mitre fence, but the basic rip...

    wadkin PK restoration

Hi Mark... I haven't come back to this thread for some time as I have been busy. But what you are doing to that Wadkin is, I think, a rare thing. Somewhere between engineering and art there is a space that touches both. I know just a few who get it, and there are books about others who do or...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

yes James, that solves that one. Worth mentioning I think that with the above you have a single fixed jaw height, and one thing I like a lot about the vice mount is to set the height just where you want it. Also generally the workpieces are smallish... a drawer side say. I used mine a lot...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Delighted you are happy with it Andy... I trust the r/h thread will ease a little with use? It's hard and a bit hit-and-miss getting the 2 threads equal clearance, and I tend to prefer a tads tight at first, as it will ease up I expect. The brown oak buttons should align when the face is...

    HUGE Gloat...mixed with sadness......

Indeed, that is a very fine saw. I was puzzled too re the left-handed question, but I'm clear now. There was even a rumour once that the teeth were set differently, that had me totally lost. I did get to have a fairly close look, it's perfect. Quick test and I'm right-handed: The Two Lawyers...

    Ok, it's a big chisel.

Very nicely done Richard. I saw it before tuning and it showed buckets of promise - for one so old and so 'big' it's amazing it had seen so little use. Very impressed with the sharpening, and your comments re the steel are rather interesting too. I suspect it will take an edge far beyond its...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Hi James - just had a look again at the Benchcrafted Moxon - they make very nice hardware indeed and I once almost got their wagon / tail vice but chose Richard Maguire's which is brilliant and rather less expensive. I was surprised to note the Benchcrafted is 8tpi, though the wheels will spin...

Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

Thank you very much Setch - not really bang-on if you saw them in the hand... but within reason I do like a bit of 'handmade detailing'. Mr Krenov's 'leave fingerprints' again, and I did

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Ah yes, I can see how it works now. The legs look excellent - i still think the square section suits the overall design better than turned ones. Took a look at the shoulder plane thread - a fine plane indeed but not for me I'm afraid, not patient enough and I'm not sure me and metal get along...

You guys don't seem that excited...

Roger - the Irish take on the Laser race was brilliant, thanks for the link =D> =D> I was finding the UK commentator on the sailing just a bit annoying...' that's the right hand when you are standing at the back of the boat...' and all that helpful stuff.

You guys don't seem that excited...

I've been very excited. Amazing performances and results. But I have a sense of foreboding. The closing ceremony / party. I fear a big turnout of the usual suspects - the 20th Century old farts (they know who they are), topped off by bloody Macca... again. As one press said: 'Let it be, Paul.' I...

Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

The wood is cherry, but it's rather blonde / bland at the moment. I have a good few sawn boards and and some have better colour than others, but for the legs I went for straightest grain as the legs end up quite thin and also I assumed they would work better with the scratch (which they did...
