Ramped shooting boards - do they really work better?

Sorry to hover over this: I think I do understand so what am I missing. I'm saying forget the stock, orientation (flat, ramped etc irellevant) - there is only skew when direction is NOT at 90 degrees to the edge. A further check - when I plane a top at an angle, that is not a skew cut - rotating...

Ramped shooting boards - do they really work better?

Just a thought - for any slicing at all the cutting edge must be at an angle other than 90 degrees to its direction of travel.

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

Thanks Derek. I am firmly in the hefty cap school (is there one?). Years with the Record SS, numerous woodies and the odd premium one-off universally support my intuition. Your LV chipbreaker looks and sounds what I aim for, I estimate around 60 degrees and make a flat probably around .6mm, i...

How to make polish from beeswax

Thanks all, and ED - the answers to most points are kind of the same - I have an inquisitive mind :) I use linseeds a lot (BLO mainly) elsewhere but I too prefer tung when finishing - I find the viscosity of the stuff I have lower (I do thin blo), and it seems to me it hardens a little quicker...

How to make polish from beeswax

I want to trial some home-made finish: carnauba, beeswax, tung oil (pure) - I've read the thread here and my first guess may be 50/50 carnauba / beeswax, and about 50/50 waxes to oil by volume. Just a starter position. The carnauba is obviously less marking, is it actually harder or is that just...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

D_W - my #3 is an early bronze with the thin pressed cap. It was some time later they introduced the current heftier design and I do fancy trying that, my LN3 is a real day-to-day basic so i'm not chasing rainbows with it. You are right, I can get an LN one over there and have someone I know...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

Excuse me heading sideways for a moment - just wondered about getting a new chipbreaker for my old LN No3. They do make them, but why don't Axi do them?? After all Axi and Brimark (UK distributor for LN) are one. Rubbish. Reminds me years ago when I got my 62, and Axi didn't even think to stock...

Ramped shooting boards - do they really work better?

Not worth it I reckon. The geometry dictates that they won't slice really - as the OP says. You get a few degrees which is nothing worth bothering with. Maybe OK on thin wide boards but as a general all-round board for say cabinet work, no gains I don't think. Regarding using the width of...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Not boring at all. Fewer and fewer craftsmen capable of doing this kind of work properly these days. I suppose because sashes are fading out of use, the makers have been too. Richard Arnold (who appears here sometimes) is one of the very few in England and he's almost famous ;)

Nice combination of woods and the dovetailed cross is neat. What oil are you using, I want to mix a bit of this stuff up and try it?

Hi Pete, I made the wedge (ebony) 6 degrees. I checked 2 woodies and got around 8-9 degrees (if I measured right). I had bedded the iron to the body (camelia oil, ground file as scraper a la Bill Carter), I may need to do the same with the wedge to upper iron face. The bridge is just 1/2" round...

In praise of the 2-part cap.

Very thorough Andy - checked mine and pretty much same answers, but noticed a couple of things which marks the Cliftons down: A 4½ Record SS - 4 thou yes, 6 thou no: A Record #3 - same: 4 yes, 6 no A Clifton #4, 6 yes, BUT max is offset to one side So there is consistency again. Clifton...

Something for a change (for me). I am absolutely not a plane maker, but I'd wanted a mid-size shooter for ages and I knew just what size, weight etc I fancied. So from the spare bits bin I made a very simple quick one. I didn't time it but I'd guess 4 hours max, excluding prepping the unflat...

In praise of the 2-part cap.

David, I must say I have not inspected it closely (the upper fixed section?). I will look tomorrow but I am assuming it must be pretty flat otherwise mating the lower section to iron back would have raised an issue. But, don't know and will take a look.

In praise of the 2-part cap.

I didn't intend to give any impression at all that I was caught up in any aspect of this. I am about the last person that needs telling that the shavings go in the bin. If you knew me you would know that. And your first statement above is inaccurate.

In praise of the 2-part cap.

Just a quick observation and only my views of course, although I will support those views with reasoning etc. Here we can share practical experiences. There's been chat here lately about getting the cap iron down close, and elsewhere it has been an active topic for a while. I just re-tuned an...

Now i know why you needed hefty clamps Bm !! And a thing that HSE don't understand is that to build a proper bench you need baccy. Pics when it's done please.

    Bench design / Plans

Nick, I don't think you need a bench to build a bench ;) But a couple of saw horses or other supports will be needed mainly for top glue up. Re those plans I also don't think you need them. It's a solid stiff top and 4 legs, stretchers for stiffness, vices as preferred. One thing I strongly...
