    Marking gauge/veneer slicer construction problem.

I'm particularly keen to see the chosen cutter solution, Rosewood... looks more like beech to me  Very nicely made so far - is the shape for ergonomics? should have scrolled down further - i see it now. That is very like the Japanese style pin that Woodbloke is a fan of - great in...

    super accurate bandsaws

I agree with Steve above. I used to just tweak the fence to compensate, but a little more time going back to source of bias is time well spent. I found the quick way to get very close is to adjust the position the blade runs on the wheels (forward/back) a little, but also most tables can be...

    turning tool handles

It's odd I put a thank you post on this yesterday and uploaded it and it's not here  Probably hanging on the end of something entirely different elsewhere. Many thanks to all for a lot of very good info and expertise. This really is a concise 'now-to' on turning tool handles - an...

    another box

Thanks for the comments all (and Mr Turner - been a while, and the Corian router table is fantastic, thanks :) Re Skills and lacewood... totally understand. When I conceived this I had got the very nice LP and was excited as it had been difficult to find. I still like it a lot but I'm not sure...

    turning tool handles

Bit of help required please. I sometimes turn handles for chisels etc, and regularly hit the same problems. My lathe is a Coronet, long bed, and I have a good chuck for it (can't remember what, it's American, ex Rutlands). The 2 issues are [1] boring the hole for tang - not coming out bang-on...

    Modifying woodies

Yes Andy - I have departed from the woodie norm with this bun knob. I want to see how it feels in use as I find the trad way awkward, particularly on long passes (which this size is surely is intended for). I ought to make this the scrub I intended (as said, not touched the blade yet) - I really...

    Modifying woodies

Can't say yet Andy, need to tune the blade and the cap which is very slightly convex at the contact area - lots of blade left and it hasn't been misused, just left to get dusty and a little surface corrosion. I was pleased with the tote - pleasant work... but Liogier rasps of course :D I...

    I blame Roy Underhill!

Excellent work Andy. I am particularly keen to see how the finishing looks (having a morticer to do up, as you know).

    Modifying woodies

This was prompted by a chat with Richard Arnold at Mac on Sunday, and also slightly by Richard Maguire doing a clean-up of a shoulder plane recently. I acquired a woodie jack for £8 recently - nice and workable with a good Ward blade, but not an investment piece by a long stretch. I first got it...

    another box

Deadline been and gone, but all done in time. Jim kindly donated some very fine kid leather for the upper tray liner, the drawers remain bare cedar of L. I'm happy that so far the top is looking very stable so the patience pre-conditioning it may have paid off. Had to cheat with Ian's hinges...

    Mactimbers Open Day

Time to report back. Excellent day, even though for me it's 120 miles each way, so it needs to be good! Of particular note for me was a very good chat with Richard A about the considerable merits of old woodies (particularly as they can be found for a few pounds on eBay)... a chat with Richard...

    I blame Roy Underhill!

What a beauty indeed, slightly envious. What with the foot powered scroll saw and this, it must be quite peaceful over there. I hope you restore it quicker than I have managed with the hand morticer. Re degreasing, I think Jim knows a few tricks.... where's Jim?

    Mactimbers Open Day

Yes indeed, a grand day out, might even not rain.

    fatigue in a hardwood

Indeed, all a bit confusing - but a useful wood nonetheless. Got it fixed, the spigot is now considerably bigger diameter, with roundover in the shoulder. A couple of things I have discovered with these - I made this from 1 1/2 round bar which was wasteful as 1 1/4 would suffice (it ended up...

    fatigue in a hardwood

I'd forgotten that BB - I get mine from Timberline and I recall Robert there saying bow makers used it. Lemonwood it will be then. (He also calls it Castello box and it seems it is good for recorders too, that's handy to know.)

    fatigue in a hardwood

Thanks all, agreed, wrong material and a basic error in design. I plan to open the hole up in the head quite a bit, but still have a little bit of shoulder (maybe 1.5mm), then put a decent radius on the transition from handle to spigot. If the dia of spigot increases say 50%, cross area goes up...

    fatigue in a hardwood

Someone out there will be saying 'told you so'... but I didn't anticipate this: A small brass mallet I made some time ago (one of a pair, this is the larger one). The handle is ebony. I only ever use it for tap adjustments (sometimes planes, the other day adjustments to the assembly of a big...

    Am I missing something here?

Now there's a thing. If I wished to blow four hundred quid on this thread...? I'd go for the Miyabe knife every time. Given time, I could cut an approximation of a chopping board with that. I couldn't make a knife like that with a lacewood board, no-matter how much time. Also If I have done my...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Very impressive Andy. You now have me interested in the foot-powered fret saw. I generally use a jewellers fret saw to remove most of the waste, but your device looks very good. I am wondering about floor space however, as I seem to be running out of it. I do agree by the way, the 'Moxon' vices...

    Submariners Crest

Outstanding work. The Polaris blackwood touch is a really nice twist, no doubt of some personal relevance (to client). I'm just left wondering why it takes me so long to make things :?
