    a wood thread thread

thanks xy and Andy. We all do that... dissappear off into a cold workshop for days on end and come out with a thing :D I think, Andy, that rx is head of music stools. I choose a life of vice.

    a wood thread thread

Here are pics of the thread box, cutter etc. For this thread I used 8mm sq O1. Roy Underhill's program about this is reasonably handy but he does skim over some bits (due to program length no doubt) - it's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIveDZVxTD4 Things to note: - the vee is not 60...

    Calligraphy

Someone sent me a link to this video of calligraphy - only a couple of minutes, stunning work and techniques, very nicely shot film too!! worth a quick look: http://vimeo.com/99821064

    a wood thread thread

Fair point Cheshire and good practice for 'normal' tap/die sets (I assume) - but the ali female here is not cutting, it is there for 2 things: feed the pitch (maintain pitch rate) and help keep the stock on axis. I use a fairly deep infeed guide to get the stock on axis too, plus turning the...

    Steam drying - effects?

Thanks Richard. I've just this minute read elsewhere here that steamed is more stable than unsteamed...??! Re m/c I keep a fair bit of beech in the workshop and several blanks cut to size (around 500 x 100 x 40) so I plan to re-check m/c as I assumed (without checking) that the kilned and aired...

    Steam drying - effects?

I'm interested to understand this better and have searched a bit, but there seems little regarding effects on the wood from a working and structural point-of-view. I suspect super-heated steam is being used to stabilise lower grade stocks (Oak Furnitureland, cheap worktops etc)? I think normal...

Proxxon disc sander - user views?

Many thanks for feedback. I'm hesitating, it may be too big a compromise just for a small size. The Record looks good but it's back to something big. Wonder if there is such a thing as an 8" disc sander, I shall have a hunt.

Arts & Crafts oak - colour / finish

Yes, I'm happy using Van Dyck - I like the control it gives, and it's honest old stuff. I used Osmo top oil on some worktops a while ago, then on some worktables, very impressed with how easy, fast and really good looking tough finish with minimal build. I need to test the Van Dyck but it may...

    a wood thread thread

I followed Andy Ts thread on the topic with interest, and wood screws are generally excellent things so here's a bit more. This is what it's all about: I'll get rxh along because he enthusiastically joined me for this challenge. His Barnes lathe can cut silly pitches (down to 0.5 tpi I...

    Holdfast for £49

I'm not convinced fit need be an issue - I use mine in the top (4") and in the sliding deadman (2") and they are fine from one to the other. The holes are all 19mm. By the way, has anyone seen the new Benchcrafted ones (on their blog I recall) at a cool $190 a pair.

Request for advice on timber prep for moulding planes.

Completey agree Richard - I've been getting through a good volume of beech recently and used both (air-dried from Mac and a local supplier; and kilned European from Morgans). I always find the kilned more sort-of 'brittle' - it feels different to work, sounds different. It's hard to describe but...

Proxxon disc sander - user views?

Does anyone have one of these (or experience of using), basically any good? I could do with a small one like this, had a big belt/disc thing and got rid of it. Any user feedback appreciated.

mystery object? Its a Sash Fillister. No, a plough. Thanks

Sash fillister plane. Appears to be missing the 2 wedges that set the fence (pic 1, slots to side of guides), easy to re-make those from beech or box. Looks like a nice one.

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

Richard will be back on this point, but I know he had to open the mouth a bit. It might be that the common No4 'tune-up' to a thick iron and cap (QS for example) would convert back, as you generally need to open the mouth for those iron set-ups anyway. I suspect the idea is a cheap donor No4 and...

    slot cutting in brass

Probably 6 Andy, but maybe 12  I did a prototype that way in 1.6mm (which was too thin anyway) and it was rather slow and faffy, ended up slightly unperfect. As I have the Myford, I can mount the stock cut to size onto the cross slide and see how I go with a cutter in the chuck or get a...

    slot cutting in brass

Plenty of good info here, thanks all. I've read all the links re slot drills / end mills. The original link is 4 flute 'end mills' but centre cutting. I may need to invest in collets etc, but I think this is worth a go anyway. Given the tendency to grab, is it worth drilling a through clearance...

    slot cutting in brass

Many thankls for all this, quick service too =D> On balance I think I like the ML7 option as it feels more controlled. My chuck is a 3 jaw, but I'll check concentricity. If I am doing a few of these I guess a collet mounted into a Morse taper into drive spindle would be best? (Sorry if...

    Record BS300E Upgrades

Wow! Not seen this thread for a while but your 300 must be the best on the planet now!. Very nice work, and admirable patience. One thing I found on my 500 was the wheel balance was a little off. I passed it on a while ago and got an old green Startrite 352 - but if your wheels are well balanced...

    slot cutting in brass

Any advice please? I need to cut slots in brass sheet 2mm or maybe 3mm. The slots are round ends, about 70mm long and 9mm across (diameter of cutter). I don't have a mill of course. I do have a pillar drill, various routers, an ML7 but no mill attachment. I may need to do a few and hand-cut is...

No. 4 Plane Conversion to a Scraper

A brilliant idea, there are plenty of old No4s around and you don't even need a complete one! Very smart. I'll own up - I've had a go with this plane, comparing it with Richard's small scraper plane and his Lie Nielsen. Both the small one and the LN are excellent - I think the No4 is very close...
