    Sash windows

Hi Rich, The first bit of proper carpentry I did was to make a triple sash window for my own house a few years ago and I have just this week started to make 3 off double sash windows out of Accoya which I have bought rough sawn. I haven't paid to much for machinery / tools and have accumulated...

    Quiet compressors and pin nailer

I recently bought a Hyundai 50L 'super silent compressor' and I cannot believe how quiet it is, my workshop is within the house and I can have the compressor on late into the evening and it disturbs no one else within the house even. Hyundai do smaller models with the same range too. I also...

Best sheet material for painted cabinets

I have just used MFC to make my kitchen carcasses and think its a sensible choice for kitchen cabinets as its the surface fit pre-finshed, is hard wearing, is very flat and stable, is perfect for wiping down and you don't need to paint or finish it in any way. If you buy a good quality MFC such...

    Kitchen Cabinets

Thanks Rafezetter, I appreciate your comments. Spectric, I’m afraid I can’t compare to the dowelmax as I’ve never used one. I would however like to gently suggest that maybe you are missing the point with the domino in as much as I don’t think it matters that every single mortice is precisely...

    Kitchen Cabinets

Thanks Bob. Spectric, remember though that the sloppy setting is only sloppy in one plane! The key is to just use the tight settlings once in each axis to provide the datum and then use the loose settings for the remainder.

    Kitchen Cabinets

Thanks Doug, I really don't know how many hours in total it took me - but certainly an awful lot longer than it would have taken in a professional.

    Kitchen Cabinets

Misses also got me to make all the draw dividers and cupboard doors racks and a wine cooler cabinet next to fridge. Thanks to everyone on here who helped me along the way and answered my questions and gave me ideas. I’ve learnt a lot throughout the process and fully enjoyed it, it also helped...

    Holy mother, timber is expensive!

I just purchased enough Accoya to make 3 complete box sash windows - I know Accoya is expensive, but I was shocked when the best quote came in at £1300 inclusive of vat. As an aside, I've never used Accoya before so looking forward to using it.

    Advice on drawer runners needed

The guys who man the Blum technical helplines are very knowledgable and helpful and easy to get hold of, worth calling them if you have any questions. I just used Blum Movento on my kitchen cabinets and very happy with them - not cheap though!

    Performance Power Router - manual?

Ive been using a Leigh jig lately and Leigh like to supply all their router dovetail bits with 8mm shanks. They give the reason you mentioned - that it makes for a more rigid cutting bit - I guess for certain size cutters it makes for a good compromise between 1/4" and 1/2".

    Sawdust...

Hi all, thanks very much for all the suggestions, hadn't thought of the chickens and horses, so I'll see if there is anyone local I can approach. Its mainly planer / thicknesser shavings - predominantly oak and poplar recently - next project is 3 sash windows and I might give Accoya I go for...

    Reciprocating saw on paving slabs?

Ossie - I'm still on the original which seems a very good blade - regarding replacements, the odd size is the bore which is 20mm rather than the more widely available 22.5mm - I guess any 125mm dia blade with a 20mm bore will work, but you are right, i haven't been able to easily find an exact...

    Pillar Drill Buying Advice

Bosch PBD40, although unconventional is perfect for this sort of thing as depth stop and digital readout for depth alongwith ease of changing speed make it such a useful and easy to use m/c for this sort of fiddly job - if you wanted to go this route you may have to look for a secondhand one...

    Reciprocating saw on paving slabs?

I agree with the 9" disc cutter as being the best tool for the job, however I have one of these little makita dustless dry stone cutters and they aren't bad at all - I bought it a while ago to cut 30mm granite worktop with and it easily does that and if you hook it up to a vacuum the dust is...
