    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

I have someone who needs to make a swap, from their allocated European recipient, to someone UK based. Any offers to trade a UK allocation for posting to someone in mainland Europe - let me know please so I can make a swap to suit all parties. PaulO - we could bring you in through this route if...

    Ed's new toolbox

I have several other boxes for screws, fixings and the like, so this one was intended for just tools. Weight-wise its more than I thought, must be the 3 planes and 2 drills that do it, plus including all the boxes and shelves its about 3/4 a sheet of ply. Ed

    Ed's new toolbox

They are finger (or box) joints. Structurally you're right of course a dovetail would be better, but I didn't because; 1. I was worried the edges of the pins and tails would be vulnerable in plywood. 2. I am lazy 3. I thought the box joints looked a bit more workmanlike for a toolbox. 4. I...

    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

Right, all the allocations are done and the 40 PM's sent out (took longer than expected, I had to drink quite a bit of beer to get through it!) I'll post some reminders as we go along ref posting date and so on. Cheers, Ed

    Ed's new toolbox

Its the stuff thats in it thats the heavy bit - the box itself is not too bad. I wouldn't go with less than 12mm as it would be too flexible I reckon. Ed

    Ed's new toolbox

Good simple design stands the test of time and I reckon this is such an example, of something that has been honed over generations to the point where it does exactly whats needed. Why reinvent the wheel when theres no need. The only issue with the design I see is the weight of a set of tools...

    Ed's new toolbox

Just got on the bathroom scales with it...35KG, so no not really manageable in one hand for any distance. The side handles and wheels are essential in my view. Ed

    Ed's new toolbox

This is a project I've been meaning to do for years, but only just got round to it. None of the commercially available toolboxes suit very well the set of tools for joinery work in my view. I've long thought that the traditional style of joiners toolbox with the drop front is ideal and a thread...

    Flattening a waterstone

If you're going to go to the expense of buying a diamond stone to flatten your waterstones, it begs the question why not just buy a suitable diamond stone to do the sharpening and dispense with the waterstones altogether. The flatness is the thing that stopped me using them as the mess of...

fraid not, I've got a planer/thicknesser and a separate thicknesser so I'm already over equipped in that field! Ed

For Sale KITY 617 Saw - Now with photos

I actually reckon the Kity mitre slot is better than the standard as there is no possibility of things lifting up. If you have the gauge that fits then the fact that its non standard is not an issue. Ed

    BEWARE OF BASHES!

On similar lines, I've also wondered about Bessey clamp pricing. These are made in Germany and sell in the US for prices far below what you can buy them for in Europe. Must be the same scenario of selling for what price they believe the market will support. Ed

    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

We have reached a grand total of 40 now, which is an excellent turn out and an improvement on last year. I will be doing the allocations tomorrow or Sunday, so still a little time to join if you are wavering. Cheers, Ed

    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

OK folks, we stand at 34 so far. Still room for any last minute takers should you feel the urge to join. I'm away for the rest of the week, so I'll allocate the names next weekend. Cheers, Ed

Edge jointing - do you plane in a hollow?

I do it, but it is literally just a couple of shavings. Ed
