Hi JamieHnd It's about the balance of the jaws. The mechanism looks very narrow and has a 3-inch jaw above the mechanism (the work peace are only sitting above the mechanism) could rock the jaws. Ta

    Vice identification

Thank you TheTiddles That's very useful. I was wondering if a 3 inches has above the mechanism would be stable and balance for use. Literally the mechanism is going to be almostb3/4 way down the jaws.

    Vice identification

There are these two vices for sale but I can not identify them. I guess the main question is if they are suitable for an English bench with aprons and a 3 inch bench top. Can anybody identify them and advice me please?

Cycle the month for Prostate cancer

Dear woodworking community I’m cycling 200 miles throughout May for Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, killing 11,500 men a year. That’s one dad, partner, son, brother, grandad, uncle or mate every 45 minutes. But it doesn't have to be this...

Insulating the Garage Door for cheap (ish)

Hi Jelly I have fully covered the gaps between door and the garage floor. And overall it feels very good. The problem I have is that wind is blowing in and lifting the Thermawrap. I was thinking to cover the back with some hardboard 3 mm screwed to the door. just don’t want to cover it and...

Insulating the Garage Door for cheap (ish)

Thank you for your reply. You are right the design is not intended to be airtight. I was thinking of filling the gaps from outside with white PVC filler and pinto g the door over it. They can be sanded and painted. But have never done it on a gap like this. Do you think it will hold or just...

Sad story of my uneven bench top

Hi Derek thank you for your reply. Two halves of my bench top were true But there was a twist between them. To take it out I built two rails which needed to be parallel hence use of winding sticks.

Sad story of my uneven bench top

I must make a pair soon for long term use. The use of aluminium profiles was a temporary use for flattening the table top only.

Sad story of my uneven bench top

There is a relative structural stability built in the T and L shape profiles. generally speaking there is more resistance and rigidity in the structure when forces applied to the width of them ( the same reason for having joist the way they are used) So under normal circumstances with no load...

Sad story of my uneven bench top

I have tried them and found the problem. the digital gadget has a level of error. I was moving it from one end to the other end and turning it 180 degree to face me when I was standing in the middle so I was causing the error to duplicate.

Sad story of my uneven bench top

I tested them for straightness based on the method of three straight edges. I checked them against each other and then against a third one individually. All three were straight and they are exactly the same height. ( I learned the method from this forum). I hope this explanation is adequate for...

Sad story of my uneven bench top

thank you for your reply and sharing your knowledge. I have to admit I am struggling to understand how to use a bevel gauge and protractor to check for twisting on the bench! Sorry I am not trained in fine woodworking rather I am self thought. Would you be kind enough to explain it to me or...
