How to check straightness of boards edges?

That's not small. That's a big gap. All you do is note where they are touching, and plane a bit off that area, then offer up again. Keep on offering up and adjusting until there is no gap. I always then like to finish with one complete full-length pass with the plane, just to clean up the face...

How to check straightness of boards edges?

Hi Jacob I totally agree with you. But I had some problem with the traditional way of offering the ends to the board. 1- as I mentioned before my timbers had gone wonky and almost had every possible bending. 2- I had flatten the top side and edges. It not the underneath it as it might had...

How to check straightness of boards edges?

I will try the builders blue chalk to see if it works. That is a simple and practical way. I will remember it for ever.

How to check straightness of boards edges?

I was making the same one but as I could not do the rebate on the side I followed Paul sellers old style bench. I have made a small tool strip which is going to have some holes for chisels and is just wide enough for a hand plane. I have had couple of suggestions which a blue chalk might be an...

How to check straightness of boards edges?

I have had a look. I can not see any noticeable unevenness. Running my straightedge I couldn't find any point either. When i put them together with a middle tools strip it shows itself.

How to check straightness of boards edges?

Good morning all I have been making my own workbench. I bought some beechwood and put them in the garage on my sawhorses. I thought it’s a good idea to have them adopting to the room before working on them. Unfortunately when I picked them up to edge join them there were all sort of bending and...

calculating the best size router bit and bushing for project

Hi Sunnybob I know you were talking about bench drill. I don’t have one yet but having drilled the hole by hand I am sure bench drill will do the job. I am researching bench drills before buying one. Any advice on buying one? Regards Saeid

calculating the best size router bit and bushing for project

Hi Just to give you an update. I took up the advice from the forum and decided to test it. I bought a set of Forstners from Screwfix ( not worth the paper they printed the receipt on) and used a HSS 22mm drill. The results was not satisfactory ( I used a hand hold wireless drill). The bushing...

calculating the best size router bit and bushing for project

Hi Jacob It is reassuring to receive encouraging advice from experienced members. I will get a bench drill and try it with Forstners. There are pretty confusing items in the market. I have seen exactly the same Forstner kit with two different brand name and as unbranded. That’s the only kit...

calculating the best size router bit and bushing for project

Hi Mike Thank you for your advice. I am only drilling 4 holes at this stage. I like the interchangeable inner template. But as the others said it might be easier to use a bench drill. I will continue to experiment and learn. Saeid

calculating the best size router bit and bushing for project

I need to drill series of holes 30 mm and 22 mm. I was planing to use a press drill to drill them but I was advised against using a small press drill as the diameter of holes on hardwood will put far more pressure than the drills can handle. Therefore I am planing to use a router with jig and...

    Twin screw vice home made

Good morning all experienced members. I have been thinking of getting a twin screw vice for a while. Finally I had some parts made for me while on holidays last week. ( Pictures ). Twin screw Vise

Hi mate Just a silly question. What’s the diameter of the lead screws? Is it 38 mm as they advice on front jaw screw holes? :?:

    Twin screw Vise

I’m building my own workbench based on Mr Sellers workbench. A larger clamping capacity will make it easier when it comes to planing side of a long strip for joining. I think a good vice is very critical for keeping the piece steady for hand cutting or planing. Currently I only use hand clamps...

    Twin screw Vise

Hi there I have been playing with idea of buying a Veritas Twin Screw vice. Are these any better than Irwin /record vice? I think the later could do the same job with out price tag. Or is it just about the size of clamp jaws? Definitely the twin screw can be up to 18 inches.

    Problem with laminating

I have planed it to some extent. It can be done but just taking time. I was planning to plane the top face and only part of the underneath it where it’s sitting on the bearer. The rest of it I thought will not play a role on balancing the bench.
