    Spirit levels

You don't really need a pack of cards just put the level on any near level horizontal surface and providing the bubble ends up in the same position in the phial when turned end for end it will be accurate.

    Holdfast not holding wood down

Have you checked to see if the 'head' of the holdfast is in full contact with the workpiece when tapped down? Shine a light from the far side and sight along the joint between the head and piece. A friend had a similar problem and found that only the heel of the head was making contact so he...

Better option for heat treating than a can of butane?

I would suggest Rothenburger as well with MAPP gas and a smaller than supplied as standard nozzle to concentrate the heat.

According to my son who has recently got a Texas driving licence ""Once you indicate, you go. No ifs, no buts - just go as it's what everyone expects!"

Leaking timber front door - how to fix?

I was thinking the same thing but you beat me to it. That is certainly the way with window glazing (apart from putty fitted but that takes some work and time to get out).

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

Ahh, those were the days. I used to get a friend of mine who worked in one of the high street bank's computer department to bring me home bags of chads so that I could use them as roof tiles for the buildings I built for the model railway.

    Roof support Conservatory

If that is the case then either the salesman/surveyor who measured the job wasn't aware of this fact or was too interested in closing the sale to earn their commission and hoped that the installers would "make it fit". The end result would certainly appear to favour the latter.

    Roof support Conservatory

What concerns me is that a couple of those metal brackets seem to be screwed into mortar courses rather than the actual brickwork/stonework which would be a far stronger joint.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

Like yourself and Peri I also started working life as a draughtsman (albeit in 1966) with the 'hand tools'. Have still got all the pens, squares, stencils, scale rules (the best one of which reads metric measurements from an imperial drawing  ), compasses, dividers, etc. Have tried CAD...
