    Breadboard End Problem.

I agree with Jacob; if you are using quarter sawn oak there should be absolutely no need for breadboard ends. For me, the fact that seasonal variations will ensure that for most of the time they do not sit flush with the sides of the table top is another very good reason for avoiding them. Jim

    The place fror accuracy

In part it depends what you aim to do. For me, a perfectly fitting draw or door is a sign of quality and craftsmanship, and I strive to achieve it. I agree with all the other posts so far as actual dimensions are concerned. As my good friend and West Dean tutor, Bernard Allen, would say...

    Parkinson wood vice No 15

This is something I did, not because of problems with the vice, but because I wanted a wider bench and an extra row of dog holes. Adding a 45 mm strip to the fornt of the bench has effectively packed out the jaws and I haven't missed that 45mm of lost clamping capacity. The extra width is...

    Treasure trove

It was only the round sliding bar that was bent. One of those foot slipping off the clutch occasions if I recall correctly. It was all a long time ago - my first company a car, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta of about 1978 vintage which was my pride and joy. It left a neat bar shaped dent in the...

    Treasure trove

That's great, Jim. I have only two tools from my father, his old record No 5 which, much fettled and fitted with a Japanese laminated blade is always a great pleasure to use, and his quick release engineers vicewith a slightly bent handle from when I ran the car into it many years ago! Jim

    Holes in burr veneers

Thanks Adidat. Don't know why I couldn't get it to work. Glad you like the table - about 2 1/2 years work (not continuous) from design idea to completion. Ifyou are interested I could try to post pics of underframe which is unconventional. Jim

    Holes in burr veneers

It depends how big the holes are. If the holes are small, sticks are fine. I made this table top in burry maple [/img] Some of the holes were a good 10mm diameter, so I traced the shapes onto paper , stuck the paper to a suitable piece of veneer with double sided tape and then cut round it...

Here is one to test your memory....

If I can bend the subject matter just a little to my first ”proper” project it contains a useful lesson. It was a coffee table in brown oak made about 14 years ago on a five day course at West Dean. The workshop is open from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm, and most students (including me) are there...

How to keep pine floor pale please

I agree with Jacob. The relatively small differences in added colour between the finishes mentioned will be nothing compared with the effect of UV over even a relatively short time. Jim

    Shooting Irons

I don't know why Matthew didn't suggest it, but the obvious solution is to buy a Quangsheng blade - takes and keeps a fantastic edge and is dead cheap. Jim

Where to buy the best coping saw?

Sorry about that David, but you know you really have to have one and you would "save" quite a bit if you went fo the aluminium version. I blame it all on David Barron for it was he who showed me his Knew piercing saw. Jim

    Stainless Steel Plane

You could be right , Jim, mine is the Axminster stuff, maybe Matthew's is better. Jim

    Stainless Steel Plane

Have to disagree with you there Jim. Some years ago I used Camelia oil and found it didn't seem to offer the level of protection I expected. I then read an article by the late great Jim Kingshott expressing the view that it is too light and tends to evaporate away too readily and that what is...

    Stainless Steel Plane

Karl Holtey's No 98 smoother and panel plane are in stainless. Somewhat more expensive than an LN though. Also, the Veritas NX60 block plane is cast in some sort of nickel steel or iron alloy which is rust proof. Jim

    Final finish

Sounds like a good technique, Bosshogg, but chucking a whole table might be a bit tricky! :D Burnishing can be done at many levels from rubbing with 0000 steel wool on its own or with white spirit for slightly more gloss or with something like Liberon burnishing cream for more gloss. Tcut or...

    Oil and Wax finish?

That's a big question because a lot depends on what sort of look you are after. Oil is OK in a bathroom but it is not the most water resistant of finishes but much depends on what sort of oil you are talking about. Also, most oils tend to darken the wood a fair bit and this may not be what...

    Final finish

Welcome to the forum Princess. I agree with Modernist, your Danish Oil should give you a good final finish, but what sort of finished effect are you after? Matt, satin gloss and are you finishing an open or finely grained wood. If you are disatisfied with what you are getting you can always...

Bandsaw Dust Extraction - My Solution

Hi Jen, Looks like a nice low-tech solution - often the best. Does your bandsaw also have a dust port somewhere near the bottom of the cabinet and, if so, is your extraction also connected to that too? It looks like you have something like a 100mm hose there and I can ssee the advantage in...

Where to buy the best coping saw?

Frankly, in the real world, I find it hard to see the extra value in the titaium version over the aluminium item that I have. I also quite like the red anodised finish which has the added advantage that it does not disappear in the mess of shavings and tools that all too often defines my bench...
